Who is Sudha Yadav? All you need to know about Karnataka’s new Governor
Sudha Yadav was sworn in as the Governor of Karnataka at a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru on Friday, October 16, 2026. Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru administered the oath of office and secrecy. Ms. Yadav’s appointment by President Droupadi Murmu follows the completion of the tenure of outgoing Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot. She becomes the second woman to hold the post in the State, after V.S. Ramadevi, who served from 1999 to 2002.
Profile: From Kargil war widow to public life
Ms. Yadav entered public life under deeply personal circumstances. Her husband, Sukhbir Singh Yadav, a Deputy Commandant in the Border Security Force, was killed during the 1999 Kargil War while fighting Pakistani forces amid artillery attacks. In recognition of his service and sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal.
Soon after, Ms. Yadav stepped into electoral politics. She was elected to the Lok Sabha from Mahendragarh in Haryana in 1999 and represented the constituency until 2004. Her move into public office was seen as an extension of her commitment to public service following her husband’s death during the conflict.
An academic by training, Ms. Yadav holds a doctorate in chemistry. She completed her Master’s degree in the subject at the University of Roorkee (now the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee), where she was awarded a gold medal.
Political career and organisational roles
Over the years, Ms. Yadav has held a range of organisational positions in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She served as the national in-charge of the party’s Other Backward Classes (OBC) Morcha, working on outreach and representation within the party structure. She has also been a member of the National Commission for Backward Classes, contributing to issues related to social justice and the rights of backward classes.
In 2022, she was inducted into the BJP’s Parliamentary Board, the party’s apex decision-making body. With that elevation, she became the second woman to serve on the Board after Sushma Swaraj, marking a notable moment in the party’s internal leadership profile.
Oath ceremony and official reactions
The swearing-in at Lok Bhavan was attended by senior State leaders and officials. Outgoing Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara and other cabinet colleagues were present. Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly R. Ashok, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi T. Narayanaswamy, Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, top officials, and judges of the High Court also attended.
Welcoming the new Governor, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar described the occasion as a significant day for Karnataka as it gains its second woman Governor. At a reception for Ms. Yadav and a farewell for Mr. Gehlot at the Vidhana Soudha, the Chief Minister said, “We should work together with renewed enthusiasm.” He congratulated Ms. Yadav on assuming office on her birthday and thanked Mr. Gehlot for his cooperation and guidance during his five-year tenure, noting that he had helped the State government address several issues.
Mr. Shivakumar also said he received phone calls from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah informing him about Ms. Yadav’s appointment. He stated that he had conveyed to them that the State government had accepted most of the Governor’s decisions and assured that the administration would extend full cooperation to the new Governor.
Extending an invitation to the State’s flagship cultural event, the Chief Minister invited Ms. Yadav to attend the Dasara celebrations in Mysuru, describing the festival as a reflection of Karnataka’s culture and traditions.
Significance of the appointment
Ms. Yadav’s appointment underscores a continuity of constitutional office in the State and adds to the representation of women in gubernatorial positions nationwide. As the second woman to hold Karnataka’s Raj Bhavan, her assumption of office brings both administrative experience and a public profile shaped by personal sacrifice, parliamentary tenure, and organisational responsibilities within the BJP.
What lies ahead
With the oath administered and formalities completed, Ms. Yadav takes charge of the Governor’s office as the State’s constitutional head. The State government has pledged cooperation, and early engagements are expected to include participation in key cultural and official events, notably the Dasara festivities in Mysuru, alongside regular gubernatorial duties.
Her tenure begins at a moment marked by bipartisan cordiality at the swearing-in ceremony and assurances from the State’s leadership of collaborative working ties with Raj Bhavan.
