Ritu Arya and Tewfik Jallab on the Emotional Fallout of ‘Apollo Has Fallen’
The globetrotting action series, Apollo Has Fallen, has recently captivated audiences with its thrilling narrative centered around Vincent, a former soldier in the French Army, and MI6 agent Zara, portrayed by Ritu Arya. As they navigate a landscape fraught with threats including hijacking, kidnapping, and the looming danger of a bio-weapon, the themes of betrayal and deceit intensify, fostering an atmosphere where trust becomes a scarce commodity.
Overview of the Series
Apollo Has Fallen serves as a sequel to Paris Has Fallen and fits within the broader ‘Has Fallen’ universe, which has previously featured Gerard Butler as Secret Service agent Mike Banning fighting chaos in films like Olympus Has Fallen, London Has Fallen, and Angel Has Fallen. Arya’s character, Zara, faces a particularly challenging moment in the explosive first episode of the new season when she decides to leave Vincent, played by Tewfik Jallab, behind. “It’s interesting where we find them at the beginning of this season,” Arya reflects during a video call from Paris, highlighting the stakes as they embark on their new mission.
Character Dynamics
As the series progresses, the complex dynamics between Zara and Vincent unfold. According to Arya, their relationship evolves significantly throughout Paris Has Fallen, where they have learned to trust, respect, and grow fond of one another. “I don’t think Zara realizes how dependent she is on Vincent until she thinks she might lose him. It is a shock to her how much she’s affected by the knowledge, and how vulnerable that makes her,” Arya explains, underscoring the emotional stakes at play. This sentiment resonates throughout the season as Zara grapples with fear and uncertainty of continuing without Vincent.
Jallab, sharing his perspective from Paris, introduces a lighter note amidst the tension. “I was so happy to be separated from Zara. It was chill; there was no pressure,” he jokes, though he acknowledges the deeper connection that binds their characters.
Complications and Emotional Depth
The intertwining fates of Zara and Vincent deepen when Vincent finds himself in love, introducing additional complications into their relationship. “There is a betrayal in the friendship between Zara and Vincent. When they are separated, Vincent thinks about Zara all the time, and when they reunite, it is a climactic moment for my character,” Jallab notes, hinting at significant developments yet to unfold in the series.
Beneath the action-packed sequences lies the emotional weight that both actors skillfully portray. Jallab faced the challenge of playing a character infected with a deadly virus, a task that demanded both emotional depth and technical skill. “How do I play a man who would probably die soon? It was probably the most technically difficult thing to play,” he admits, revealing the intense preparation required for such scenes.
Challenges in Action Sequences
Aside from intricate emotional narratives, both Arya and Jallab encountered vigorous physical challenges while filming. A particularly demanding action sequence in a Chinese supermarket exemplifies this. “We’re running around Chinatown in London on a Sunday, so you can imagine the chaos. Then we dash into this Chinese supermarket where there is a chance of mercenaries coming through any of the aisles,” Arya recalls, describing the setting. “Zara is juggling her hyper-vigilance whilst protecting a screaming civilian clinging onto her, and we had half a day to shoot it. That was quite challenging. But it looks great.”
