Decomposed body found inside old railway coach at Ponnurunni yard in Kochi
A severely decomposed body was discovered inside an old railway coach at the Ponnurunni railway marshalling yard in Kochi on Tuesday, prompting the Kadavanthra police to open an investigation. Police said the advanced state of decay has complicated efforts to identify the deceased.
Discovery at the marshalling yard
According to police, railway employees alerted authorities after the body was found in one of the coaches stationed at the yard. The incident was reported by an employee working in the yard’s electric section, and a case was subsequently registered at the Kadavanthra police station.
Condition and identification challenges
Police sources indicated the remains are suspected to be at least a month old. The level of decomposition has made it difficult to determine the person’s identity or gather immediate clues about the circumstances leading to the death.
Coach earmarked for scrapping
The body was located in a coach that had been brought to the Ponnurunni yard for scrapping, according to details recorded in the First Information Report (FIR). No further information about how or when the deceased may have entered the coach was available at the time of reporting.

The remains were shifted to Ernakulam General Hospital for a postmortem examination. Police said a case of unnatural death has been registered, and further investigation is under way.
