Major fire breaks out at Fort Kochi’s iconic Koder House

A major fire gutted Koder House, one of Fort Kochi’s most prominent heritage landmarks, on Tuesday evening, sending panic through the coastal town. No injuries were reported as fire and rescue teams evacuated guests and staff and brought the blaze under control after a multi-agency operation.

How the fire unfolded

The fire erupted around 7 p.m. on one of the upper floors of the multi-storey building on Tower Road and quickly spread through the structure. Strong coastal winds intensified the flames, which consumed much of the colonial-era building before crews managed to contain the blaze. Guests and staff were evacuated soon after the fire was spotted, according to Fire and Rescue Service sources, averting a larger tragedy.

Some guests’ belongings were lost in the fire. Residents and visitors in nearby buildings were also moved to safety as a precaution while crews battled the flames.

Coordinated firefighting effort

The blaze was brought under control by about 9.30 p.m. in a large, coordinated operation that drew firefighters from roughly 15 stations across Ernakulam, along with units from the Indian Navy. The Navy said it joined the effort at the request of Kochi City police, deploying defence fire tenders from INS Dronacharya, INS Venduruthy and INS Garuda. The Indian Coast Guard also assisted in the operation.

“No one has been injured in the accident. Luckily, nobody was trapped inside,” an officer with the Mattancherry fire station said. The officer added that thick smoke continued to billow from the site even after the flames were doused because the building’s floors and roof were made of wood.

Access challenges and conditions

Congested roads around the site complicated the firefighting and evacuation efforts despite police assistance with traffic management, authorities said. Windy coastal conditions further fueled the fire’s rapid spread through the largely wooden interiors.

Cause under investigation

A preliminary assessment suggested that a short circuit may have triggered the blaze, officials said. However, the exact cause and the full extent of damage will be determined after a detailed inspection by the Fire and Rescue Services and other relevant agencies.

A cherished heritage landmark

Koder House, an Indo-Portuguese red-brick mansion originally built in 1808, is closely tied to Kochi’s Jewish heritage. The building was purchased and renovated in 1905 by Samuel S. Koder of the prominent Koder family, who served as the Honorary Consul to the Netherlands. It remained in the family for three generations before being sold and, in recent years, had been operating as a luxury boutique hotel.

Known for its spacious sea-view rooms, wooden floors and carved wooden furniture, the historic structure has long been a visual anchor on Fort Kochi’s Tower Road and a draw for visitors seeking a glimpse into the city’s layered cultural past.

Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough inspection to determine the cause of the fire and assess structural stability and losses. With the blaze under control and no casualties reported, the immediate focus has shifted to ensuring the site’s safety and beginning the process of documenting damage to one of Fort Kochi’s most storied addresses.
