Chandrababu Naidu Calms Crowd at Sitharamans Madanapalle Rally, Sparks Congress-NDA Row

Clip of Naidu calming crowd at Sitharaman’s speech in Andhra’s Madanapalle sets off Congress–NDA row

A brief interruption during Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s address at a public programme in Madanapalle on October 2, 2026, snowballed into a political spat on Sunday after a clipped video went viral on X with the claim that the crowd was demanding jobs. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh cited the clip to call it a sign of public anger, drawing sharp rebuttals from Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Ms. Sitharaman, and leaders of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the BJP.

What the video shows

The incident occurred at the launch of the “Global Horticulture Hub – Rayalaseema Rising” project in Madanapalle, where Ms. Sitharaman was speaking in Telugu. As the speech progressed, some people in the audience began shouting; the specific slogans are not clear in the viral clip. In the video, the Finance Minister can be heard asking the gathering twice to listen to her for a minute. She then pauses and steps aside.

Mr. Naidu intervenes, asking the audience to sit down and stressing that the message from a Union Minister at a programme aimed at transforming farmers’ lives was important. He tells the crowd that he and Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan would step out after the event, at which point people could “make whatever slogans you want.” He also asks a few individuals climbing a railing to get down. After speaking for roughly 70 seconds, Mr. Naidu steps back and Ms. Sitharaman resumes her address.

Viral claim and Congress reaction

The clip was posted on Sunday by a social media user who claimed the crowd had shouted “give jobs first.” By evening, it had drawn over six lakh views. Reposting the video, Mr. Jairam Ramesh commented in Hindi that the Finance Minister could see “how much anger there is among the public” and that the Chief Minister had to silence the crowd.

State government and NDA leaders push back

Mr. Naidu, responding on X, said Mr. Ramesh’s interpretation “could not be further from reality.” He described what was portrayed as public anger as “an overwhelming and enthusiastic response from the people.” The “sheer enthusiasm” of the gathering, he said, required him to intervene briefly so that the programme could proceed smoothly, adding that “politically motivated social media narratives cannot change what people themselves felt and expressed.”

Ms. Sitharaman also countered the Congress leader’s claim, saying workers of the TDP and the Jana Sena Party were keen to interact with Mr. Naidu and Mr. Pawan Kalyan. “Unbelievable, Jairam. Didn’t think you were impetuous,” she wrote. The Chief Minister had told them the leaders would meet them after the programme, she added, concluding: “That was all there is to it.”

Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh accused Mr. Ramesh of amplifying “fake news” without verification. He said there had been no disruption of the Finance Minister’s speech by youth demanding jobs and alleged that a normal interaction with an enthusiastic crowd had been “deliberately clipped, twisted and given a fabricated narrative.” Urging Mr. Ramesh to “verify facts before tweeting,” he called on the Congress leader to delete what he termed a false claim.

Echoing that position, Andhra Pradesh BJP chief P.V.N. Madhav said a routine exchange with the audience had been wrongly presented as an organised protest over jobs and then amplified politically. He pointed to videos from the same event showing the crowd cheering during the Finance Minister’s address and thanking her. He argued that Rayalaseema’s aspirations for investment, employment and economic growth merited a serious discussion, not a narrative based on a selectively cut clip. He highlighted the proposed ₹1 lakh crore Horticulture Hub as the kind of large-scale investment whose impact on farmers, industry and jobs should be discussed on facts, and urged Mr. Ramesh to correct the record.

Event backdrop

The October 2 event in Madanapalle saw Mr. Naidu and Ms. Sitharaman lay the foundation stones for the ₹1 lakh crore Global Horticulture Hub and for the Indian School of Agriculture. The initiative, branded “Rayalaseema Rising,” has been presented by the State government as a major push for horticulture, allied industries and rural employment in the region.

Significance

The episode underscores how short, decontextualised clips from public events can fuel fierce political narratives online. While the Congress termed the moment a reflection of public discontent, the State government and NDA leaders insisted it was simply an enthusiastic cadre seeking to engage with their leaders. With the video’s audio unclear and competing interpretations entrenched, the dispute has broadened into a larger war of words over governance, jobs and the optics surrounding a high-stakes investment push in Rayalaseema.
