Central Teams Continue Visiting Drought-Hit Areas for Assessment

Central teams continue visits to drought-hit areas in Karnataka

Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) assessing drought conditions in Karnataka continued their field visits for a second consecutive day on Sunday, covering multiple districts and interacting with farmers and local officials to gauge the extent of crop and livelihood losses.

Field visits across affected districts

The teams visited several drought-affected villages in Yadgir and Raichur districts, as well as Gerdada and Arakere villages in Saligrama taluk of Mysuru district. Their itinerary also included select villages in Hassan and Davanagere districts. During these on-ground assessments, team members held discussions with farmers and the concerned district authorities to understand the immediate impact on agriculture and water availability and to collect data for their report.

Assessment timeline and process

The IMCTs are scheduled to continue evaluating the drought situation and estimating losses through October 6. Following the completion of their visits and data compilation, the teams will submit their findings to the Union government for consideration.

Relief sought by the State

Karnataka has submitted two memorandums to the Centre seeking drought relief. According to the State’s estimates, overall losses from the prevailing conditions amount to roughly ₹46,000 crore. In line with Central guidelines, the State has requested nearly ₹7,500 crore in relief to support affected regions and sectors.

What comes next

After the current round of inspections concludes on October 6, the IMCTs are expected to finalize and forward their report to the Centre. The document will consolidate observations from visits across Yadgir, Raichur, Mysuru (Saligrama taluk), Hassan, and Davanagere, along with inputs gathered from farmers and district administrations.

The ongoing assessment marks a key step in documenting the scale of drought impact in Karnataka, with the State’s relief request and the Central teams’ findings set to shape subsequent decisions on assistance.
