DRI seizes four elephant tusks, ivory articles; three held in Hyderabad
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Hyderabad, seized four elephant tusks weighing about 17 kg along with intricately carved ivory articles during an alleged sale in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills, officials said. Three persons suspected to be involved in the illegal transaction were apprehended during the operation.
Operation in Banjara Hills
Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officers laid a trap and intercepted the suspects as the purported deal for the elephant tusks and ivory articles was taking place. The operation led to the recovery of four articles, including carved ivory trophies, according to officials.
Seizure under the Wildlife Act
The items were seized under the provisions of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. Trade or dealing in elephant ivory and any articles made from it is prohibited under the Act, the agency noted.
Broader crackdown on wildlife trafficking
The DRI said it has been conducting intelligence-based operations nationwide to curb illegal trafficking and trade in wildlife, wildlife trophies, and items derived from protected species. The agency emphasized its continued focus on dismantling such networks across the country.
The latest seizure underscores ongoing enforcement against the illicit ivory trade and the legal protections in place for endangered species.
