How Indias Cafés Are Enhancing Customer Loyalty Beyond Coffee

India’s Cafés are Offering More Than Coffee to Build Customer Loyalty

In the competitive landscape of India’s café culture, businesses are going beyond just serving coffee to cultivate lasting customer loyalty. A visit to Mokai 2.0, the trendy café that opened its expansive new location in Bandra’s Pali Hill in March 2026, exemplifies this trend. What began as a hotspot for social media enthusiasts has transformed into an experience-driven establishment where the aesthetics of the café complement an array of unique offerings.

War for Customer Attention

Mokai, which initially launched on Chapel Road in Bandra two years prior, quickly became a favorite among celebrities and influencers, boasting over 62,600 followers on Instagram. Suraksha, a barista at Mokai, has emerged as a sensation on social media, further fueling the café’s popularity. However, as Karreena Bulchandani, the founder of Mokai, reflects, visibility and aesthetics alone aren’t sufficient to ensure customer loyalty. She emphasizes that while social media may attract visitors, it’s the quality of food, drinks, and hospitality that maintains their interest over the long term.

Since its establishment, Mokai has evolved into a sought-after venue for celebrity collaborations and product launches, particularly enjoying the patronage of film directors like Imtiaz Ali, who recently visited for the promotion of his film, Main Vaapas Aaunga. The café not only serves as an attractive backdrop but taps into the vibrant audience it has cultivated online.

Innovative Offerings at Mokai

To enhance the customer experience, Mokai has introduced a wellness bar, reflecting its online engagement with health and beauty. Bulchandani, having studied skincare and nutrition in Singapore and matcha preparation in Japan, created an “inside-out” experience. Patrons can mill and whisk their own matcha using custom stone mills from Japan, sip collagen-infused drinks, and even try out face LED masks, seamlessly integrating wellness into their café visits.

Rise of the Café Culture

The competition for consumer attention in India’s café market is intensifying, highlighted by a recent report from the World Coffee Portal’s Project Café India 2025. The branded café market in India grew by 12.7% over the previous year, now totaling 5,339 outlets. Among consumers surveyed, 24% reported visiting a coffee shop daily, illustrating the growing embedment of café culture in urban lifestyles.

However, coffee consumption in India is still relatively priced as a luxury, with the average café bill, including food and beverages, standing at ₹660.86 per visit. Espresso-based drinks often fetch nearly double the cost of food options, underscoring the need for cafés to deliver exceptional value and experiences.

The Importance of Consistency

Yash Bhanage, founder and COO of Hunger Inc. Hospitality—responsible for popular venues like Veronica’s and The Bombay Canteen—highlights that true community loyalty stems from product consistency. “True community is built through product consistency,” he asserts. Veronica’s Café, located in Bandra’s Ranwar Village, engages with its community through guided walks exploring local history and hosting coffee takeovers featuring diverse roasters from across the country.

Café Spaces as Community Hubs

Another significant player in this evolving café ecosystem is Brevè, which opened its doors in Mumbai in 2020. Co-founder Usman Bhadelia, a fitness enthusiast, envisioned Brevè as a space where athletes, creatives, and everyday coffee lovers could interact. The café’s weekend cycling rides have evolved into social meetups that foster friendships and collaboration, transcending mere coffee consumption. Following the success of its original location, Brevè has unveiled a larger flagship store in Bandra, which now houses Mumbai’s only café-run club, emphasizing inclusive fitness and community engagement.

Innovations in Hyderabad’s Café Scene

In Hyderabad, LastHouse Coffee has tapped into local culture by offering community-oriented programming. Founded by architect Naina Polavarapu, LastHouse has grown from 50 to approximately 160 seats. The café is unique in that it champions Robusta coffee sourced from Polavarapu’s family farm, and has focused on creating social spaces where patrons can connect. Organizational manager Katikaneni Amrutha has emphasized the importance of activating The Pantry, the café’s community space, ensuring interactions beyond beverage orders.

Entertainment and Arts Integration

In Chennai, Kat & Kin Coffee Roasters has recognized the need for vibrant community programming without overshadowing their core offering: great coffee. Co-founder Anek Ahuja, who is also a musician, introduced live music sessions to create a dynamic atmosphere where customers can enjoy both good drinks and local talent. The café’s innovative approach has allowed it to become a performance venue, hosting shows during the morning hours with a ticketing system that directly benefits the musicians.

Fostering Literary and Artistic Communities

The Bookbar, primarily focused on literature and arts, has successfully built a community around book readings and independent cinema in Pune. This success has led to the recent opening of their first location in Bandra, which has garnered significant patronage through donated books and community-driven events. Co-founder Avneesh Gadgil notes that their community-oriented programming is not only about books but also includes broad cultural engagement through cinema.

Challenges and Future Prospects

As cafés explore these innovative community-building strategies, they must also navigate significant economic pressures. In Mumbai, Bhanage warns that rising commercial rents make it increasingly difficult for operators to sustain profitable business models. The overwhelming costs can put immense pressure on newcomers trying to establish cafés that offer substantial community engagement while remaining economically viable.

Conclusion

India’s café culture is undergoing a transformation, where success hinges not solely on the quality of beverages served but increasingly on the depth of community engagement and unique experiences. While cafés offer more than just coffee, the challenge remains to build these enriching environments on solid business foundations that ensure sustainability and growth. As these establishments continue to innovate and adapt, they are poised to redefine social interactions and customer loyalty in the urban fabric of India.
