Bengaluru-based Flipkart expands warehousing by 14 million cubic feet ahead of festive season
Flipkart on Tuesday announced a major expansion of its supply chain and logistics arm, Ekart, adding 14 million cubic feet of warehousing space across India as the e-commerce company gears up for The Big Billion Days and the upcoming festive season.
Warehousing and processing capacity scaled up
The addition of new warehousing capacity represents a 50% increase in Ekart’s storage footprint nationwide, the company said. Alongside the physical expansion, Flipkart has also implemented technology and automation upgrades that have raised its peak processing capacity by more than 30%, a move aimed at handling the seasonal surge in orders more efficiently.
Last-mile reach widened with new hubs
To meet customer expectations for faster deliveries, Flipkart has added over 900 delivery hubs to strengthen last-mile reach specifically for the festive period. The expanded network is intended to support greater volumes of same-day and next-day deliveries.
These additions take Ekart’s nationwide network to more than 8,200 facilities, spanning fulfilment centres, sortation hubs, and last-mile delivery operations. The company also highlighted the presence of nearly 1,200 Flipkart Minutes micro-fulfilment centres across more than 150 cities, including Bengaluru, to accelerate hyperlocal order processing.
Support for MSMEs, small sellers, and artisans
In an effort to enable faster fulfilment and greater visibility for products from micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), small sellers, weavers and artisans during The Big Billion Days, Flipkart said more than 2.5 crore units of such products have been pre-positioned within Ekart fulfilment centres.
To further reduce seller fulfilment time, the company has opened 70 pick-up stations across key seller hubs, enabling quicker inbounding and dispatch of inventory during peak periods.
Employment boost for the festive season
Flipkart said it has created over 2.5 lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities in preparation for the festive season. Nearly 75,000 of these roles are for first-time entrants to the workforce, and around 60% of the new opportunities are concentrated in last-mile delivery to support the network’s expanded reach.
Extending access to new geographies
Highlighting the broader reach enabled by this year’s preparations, Hemant Badri, senior vice-president and Head, Supply Chain, Flipkart Group, said, “This year, a customer in Leh or Kargil will experience Big Billion Days for the first time.”
What this means for the festive rush
With expanded warehousing space, upgraded automation, an enlarged delivery network, and pre-positioned inventory from small and traditional enterprises, Flipkart aims to reduce delivery times and manage higher order volumes during its flagship festive sale period. The company’s focus on last-mile delivery, particularly through the addition of hundreds of hubs and the use of micro-fulfilment centres, is expected to play a central role in reaching customers across metropolitan, tier-2 and emerging markets.
The expansion underscores the Bengaluru-based company’s preparations to handle peak seasonal demand while providing broader market access to MSMEs and artisans across the country.
