The Education Department in Keralam on Thursday (October 29, 2026) suspended a physical education teacher from Ernakulam district after he was accused of making a video claiming that worms were found in the food being served to participants at the State School Sports Meet being held in Kozhikode.

According to sources, Jijo James, a teacher at Shalom Vocational Higher Secondary School, Vengola, in Ernakulam, has been taken into custody by the Kunnamangalam police.

Mr. James was allegedly found recording a video in the area where food was being prepared on Wednesday. The organisers objected to it. The police reached the spot and took him into custody “to avoid further trouble.” The food committee convener later filed a complaint against him.

Meanwhile, N. Samsudheen, General Education Minister, told the media that “some people are deliberately trying to take the shine off” the sports event. He said this could be seen as an offence against the participating students and that an inquiry would be held into the alleged conspiracy behind the incident.

A section of the media had earlier in the week reported that worms were found in the ‘sambar’ being served to students.
