R. Rajasree’s Athreyakam wins 50th Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Literary Award
Writer R. Rajasree has been chosen as the recipient of the 50th Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Literary Award for her novel Athreyakam. The honour, instituted by the Vayalar Ramavarma Trust, carries a cash prize of ₹1 lakh and a sculpture designed by noted artist Kanayi Kunhiraman.
Selection and Announcement
A judging committee comprising writers O.V. Usha and Subhash Chandran, and literary critic V. Vijayakumar selected Rajasree for the milestone edition of the award. The winner was announced at a press conference on Sunday.
Award Ceremony
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan will confer the award at a ceremony scheduled for October 27 at 5.30 p.m. at the Nishagandhi auditorium.
About the Author
R. Rajasree serves as a faculty member at the Research Centre of the Malayalam department at Government Brennen College, Thalassery. She previously won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 2021 for her novel Kalyaniyennum Dakshayaniyennum Peraya Randu Sthreekalude Katha. Her latest work, Kamalalakshmanam, is currently being serialised in a Malayalam literary weekly.
Significance of the Honour
The Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Literary Award, presented annually by the Vayalar Ramavarma Trust, recognises notable contributions to Malayalam literature. By selecting Athreyakam for its 50th edition, the committee has placed Rajasree’s work alongside a distinguished lineage of past winners, underscoring the novel’s impact and the author’s growing stature in contemporary Malayalam letters.
The formal presentation later this month is expected to bring together leading figures from Kerala’s literary and cultural circles to celebrate the achievement.
