Onions to Be Sold at ₹35 a kg at Vijayawada’s Rythu Bazars from September 30; 2 kg Per Family Per Month

The Andhra Pradesh government will begin selling onions at a subsidised price of ₹35 per kilogram at all Rythu Bazars in Vijayawada from Wednesday, September 30, 2026, as part of its efforts to contain the impact of rising prices. The initiative was announced through a government press release.

Rollout and Eligibility

Agriculture Minister K. Atchannaidu and Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar said that each family would be eligible to purchase up to 2 kg of onions per month under the scheme. Buyers must produce either an Aadhaar card or a ration card to avail themselves of the subsidised price at the designated markets.

Price-Control Measures Under Review

The Ministers stated that the government is regularly reviewing market conditions and taking measures to check the rise in prices of essential commodities. They added that, based on public response in Vijayawada, the onion-subsidy programme would be extended to all Rythu Bazars across the State.

Part of a Wider Relief Package

The subsidised onion sale is among a set of measures announced by a group of Ministers on September 25. As part of that package, the government also approved the sale of super-fine rice at ₹50 per kilogram at Rythu Bazars to provide relief to consumers amid price pressures in the retail market.

Procurement Through Price Stabilisation Fund

Explaining the procurement plan, Mr. Atchannaidu noted earlier that onions do not have a minimum support price (MSP). To ensure supplies at the subsidised rate, the State government will procure onions using its price stabilisation fund and sell them at Rythu Bazars.

Reducing Dependency and Expanding Cultivation

The government also intends to expand onion cultivation into non-traditional growing areas within Andhra Pradesh. According to the Ministers, the objective is to reduce the State’s dependence on supplies from Maharashtra and to enhance resilience against market fluctuations.

Next Steps

The programme will commence in Vijayawada on September 30. Authorities will monitor demand and operations at Rythu Bazars in the city before taking a decision on expanding the subsidised sale of onions to the rest of the State.
