UP is fifth-largest exporting state; Bhadohi’s carpets make a major contribution, says Chief Minister
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday, October 4, 2026, credited Bhadohi’s famed carpet industry with playing a key role in propelling the State into India’s top five exporting states. In a series of posts on X, he said Uttar Pradesh’s exports have grown nearly 2.27 times over the past decade to cross ₹2 lakh crore, with Bhadohi’s carpets making a “major contribution” to that performance.
Exports surge and Bhadohi’s role
“The talent of Bhadohi once had to find its own way, but today the government is opening new doors of development, markets and opportunities for it,” the Chief Minister wrote. “The state’s exports have increased by nearly 2.27 times in the last 10 years and have crossed ₹2 lakh crore. Uttar Pradesh is the fifth-largest exporting state in the country. Bhadohi’s carpets make a major contribution to these exports.”
Drawing a contrast with the pre-2017 period, he said the same artisan community that took Bhadohi’s carpets to global markets had long awaited basic facilities and opportunities. According to him, those hands are now being connected “with development and the global market” under the current “double-engine government,” and the demand for Bhadohi’s handmade carpets is at present among the highest worldwide, bringing recognition to Uttar Pradesh’s craftsmanship on a global stage.
Golden jubilee India Carpet Expo inauguration
Adityanath said he would inaugurate the golden jubilee edition of the India Carpet Expo—described by him as Asia’s largest international handmade carpet trade fair—and meet exporters, sellers and entrepreneurs from across the industry. “Today we will inaugurate the golden jubilee edition of Asia’s largest international handmade carpet trade fair, ‘India Carpet Expo’, and interact with exporters, sellers and entrepreneurs of the carpet industry,” he posted.
He framed the event as emblematic of the State’s push to align traditional craftsmanship with contemporary markets. “Respect for the artisan’s hands, expansion of enterprise, employment for the youth and prosperity for Bhadohi—this is the new identity of the confluence of heritage and development in the new Uttar Pradesh,” the Chief Minister stated.
Development projects for Bhadohi region
Alongside the trade fair, the Chief Minister announced a package of local development initiatives. He said that 112 projects worth more than ₹1,340 crore would be “gifted” to the Bhadohi, Aurai and Gyanpur Assembly constituencies. He added that beneficiaries of multiple government schemes would also receive their entitlements on the occasion, though specific programme details were not listed in his posts.
Artisanship and market linkages
In his remarks, Adityanath emphasized linking traditional artisanship to modern infrastructure and global demand, an approach he said was designed to expand market access and employment while preserving the region’s heritage skills. He underscored that Bhadohi’s hand-knotted and handmade carpets have secured international recognition, with demand “highest in the world,” and positioned the district as central to the State’s export ambitions.
Outlook
With the inauguration of the India Carpet Expo’s golden jubilee edition and the rollout of over ₹1,340 crore in projects, the State government is signaling continued support for Bhadohi’s carpet sector and allied local development. The Chief Minister’s emphasis on artisans, enterprise expansion and youth employment points to a policy focus on sustaining export momentum by deepening production, logistics and market linkages for one of Uttar Pradesh’s most recognized traditional industries.
