CM Vijay launches Tamil Nadu Semiconductor Ecosystem Scheme 2026
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Thursday, October 15, 2026, launched the Tamil Nadu Semiconductor Ecosystem Scheme 2026 at the State Secretariat in Chennai. The initiative is designed to position Tamil Nadu as a leading hub for semiconductor and advanced electronics manufacturing in India and to attract new investments across the sector, according to an official release.
Background
The State’s new scheme comes in the wake of the Union government’s approval of the Semicon India Programme 2.0 on July 15, 2026. The Centre’s programme seeks to strengthen the entire semiconductor value chain, including chip design, semiconductor manufacturing equipment and raw materials, wafer fabrication (fabs), research and development, and skill development. State officials said the Tamil Nadu initiative is aligned with these national objectives and aims to build a robust, end-to-end ecosystem locally.
Scheme architecture and focus areas
As outlined in the official communication, the Tamil Nadu Semiconductor Ecosystem Scheme 2026 will be implemented under two categories:
Category 1: The State government will extend additional incentives and support over and above the financial assistance provided by the Union government for projects approved under the Centre’s Semicon India Programme 2.0 and the India Semiconductor Mission. This is intended to enhance the competitiveness and attractiveness of Tamil Nadu for large-scale semiconductor and advanced electronics investments that qualify under the central schemes.
Category 2: The State will also offer support and incentives to eligible investment projects that may not fall under the Union government’s Semicon framework but are considered vital to strengthening Tamil Nadu’s semiconductor ecosystem. According to the release, this includes projects that contribute to the broader value chain development, ecosystem depth, and long-term resilience of the sector within the State.
Key objectives
Officials described the scheme as a targeted effort to catalyse investments across the spectrum of semiconductor-related activities—from upstream inputs and equipment to downstream manufacturing and enabling infrastructure—while facilitating research, innovation, and talent development. By addressing both central scheme-linked investments and strategically important projects outside that ambit, the State aims to foster a comprehensive, sustainable semiconductor ecosystem.
Officials present
The launch event at the Secretariat was attended by Minister for Industries S. Keerthana, Chief Secretary M. Sai Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce) S. Vijayakumar, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Guidance Tamil Nadu Deepak Jacob, and Executive Director of Guidance Tamil Nadu Pallavi Varma.
What’s next
The State government indicated that the scheme is geared toward accelerating industry engagement and attracting proposals that align with Tamil Nadu’s strategic priorities in semiconductors and advanced electronics. Further operational details are expected to follow through official channels as implementation progresses.
Significance
With the launch of the Tamil Nadu Semiconductor Ecosystem Scheme 2026, the State has signalled its intent to build on the momentum of the national Semicon India Programme 2.0. By offering top-up incentives for centrally approved projects and opening a pathway to support critical ecosystem initiatives outside the central framework, Tamil Nadu aims to bolster its competitive edge in one of the world’s most consequential high-technology sectors.
