Bastar Converts Former Security Camp Into Hostel for Tribal Schoolboys

Former security camp in Bastar converted into hostel for tribal schoolboys

A former security camp in Bhatpal, a remote part of Narayanpur district in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region, has been repurposed into a residential facility for more than 150 tribal schoolboys, marking a visible shift from conflict-era infrastructure to education-focused amenities. Narayanpur Collector Namrata Jain described it as the first initiative of its kind in the Bastar division to convert a security installation for educational and hostel purposes, “marking a shift from security-oriented infrastructure to facilities focused on education and the future of children in the region.”

From security outpost to student accommodation

For over 15 years, the Bhatpal campus housed personnel deployed in the insurgency-hit region. As the security situation improved, the premises were transitioned into a hostel and began operating as a residential facility on August 11 this year, months after the Union government declared India free from Left Wing Extremism.

The reconfigured campus now comprises two sections: a pre-matriculation hostel for Scheduled Tribes boys in Classes 6 to 10, and a post-matriculation hostel for those in Classes 11 and 12. According to a statement from the district administration, the pre-matriculation section has a sanctioned capacity of 100, but is currently accommodating 114 students. The post-matriculation section has a sanctioned capacity of 50 students and presently houses 39. The hostels are fulfilling the residential needs of students from Education City, Kutul.

Addressing access and affordability

Local students say the facility is easing the burden of pursuing education from distant villages. Komendra, a Class 12 student from Rajbeda, about 22 km away, said the opening of the post-matriculation hostel has provided significant relief. Previously, he was compelled to stay outside the school premises, incurring additional expenses on accommodation. The hostel, he noted, offers a safe and affordable option close to his school.

Collector Jain said the objective is to tackle one of the most persistent obstacles for children from remote and hard-to-reach areas: access to safe accommodation near their schools. By converting existing infrastructure, authorities are aiming to reduce dropout risks tied to distance, safety, and cost.

Officials highlight a shift in development priorities

Emphasising the broader implications of the conversion, Ms. Jain said, “The transformation reflects the changing development priorities in areas that have historically faced challenges related to security, connectivity, and access to basic services. As the region moves towards a new phase of development, existing infrastructure is increasingly being utilised to strengthen education, social development, and opportunities for local communities.”

Significance for Bastar division

District officials underline that this is the first time in the Bastar division that a former security camp has been turned into an educational residential facility. While the region has long grappled with insurgency-related constraints, the Bhatpal conversion is being positioned as a template for repurposing infrastructure to directly address community needs—particularly those of tribal students requiring stable, proximate housing to continue their studies.

As the hostels approach full capacity in the pre-matriculation section and steadily expand in the post-matriculation wing, local administrators say the initiative demonstrates how legacy security assets can be adapted to support education and social development in areas emerging from prolonged conflict.
