Wildlife Conservation Programmes Held at Samata Degree College

Wildlife conservation programmes held at Samata Degree College

Wildlife conservation programmes were organised at Samata Degree College in MVP Colony on Monday as part of Wildlife Week, with speakers urging students and the community to strengthen efforts to protect biodiversity and natural habitats.

Observing Wildlife Week

Principal Sarabandi said Wildlife Week is observed from October 2 to 8 to create awareness about conservation and biodiversity. The college’s programmes were aimed at highlighting the role of educational institutions and youth in advocating for the preservation of flora and fauna, she noted.

Calls for community-level afforestation and species protection

Addressing the gathering, Green Climate Team NGO founder secretary J.V. Ratnam urged people to protect all forms of life, adding that the extinction of any species represents a loss to humanity. He called for a forest to be planted on every 10 acres in every village and stressed the need to safeguard species that are beneficial to agriculture. Such measures, he said, would support ecosystem health and strengthen rural livelihoods.

Warning on deforestation and illegal hunting

Vice-Principal Shilpa drew attention to the damage caused by deforestation and illegal hunting, underscoring the importance of protecting wildlife habitats. She said that unchecked habitat loss disrupts ecological balance and reiterated the need for stricter protection and community vigilance to curb destructive activities.

Participation

Faculty members, NSS representatives, NGO coordinator J. Rajeshwari and students took part in the programmes, which focused on awareness-building and collective responsibility toward conservation.

Significance

The event placed a clear emphasis on habitat protection, community-based afforestation and the conservation of species vital to agriculture, aligning with the broader goals of Wildlife Week to foster public awareness and action for biodiversity.
