Two migrant workers killed as borewell rig overturns onto house in Keralam
Two migrant workers were killed in the early hours of Saturday when a borewell drilling lorry overturned onto a house near Varakkad junction in West Eleri village, Kasaragod district of Keralam. The family inside the house escaped unhurt.
What happened
According to initial information, the accident occurred between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. The Tamil Nadu-registered borewell rig reportedly lost control while negotiating a steep downhill stretch of a subsidiary road leading to the main road at Varakkad. The vehicle crashed into a nearby house and overturned on top of it, causing significant damage to the structure.
Victims identified
The deceased were identified as Devendran, a native of Madhya Pradesh, and Manase, also known as Manasir, from Chhattisgarh. Both were part of the team operating the borewell rig.
Impact on the locality
In addition to damaging the house, the vehicle struck a nearby electric post, disrupting power supply in the area. Residents of the damaged house were asleep at the time of the crash and were not physically harmed, authorities said.
Emergency response and procedures
Police reached the spot soon after the incident and initiated further procedures. The bodies have been moved to the mortuary of the district government hospital in Kasaragod. Officials said the owner of the vehicle and other workers who were accompanying the deceased have been informed of the accident.
Next steps
Following the inquest and postmortem examination, the bodies will be handed over to the relatives of the deceased. Restoration of power supply to the affected area is expected after repairs to the damaged electric post.
The incident has drawn attention to the risks associated with maneuvering heavy drilling rigs on steep, narrow roads in hilly terrain. Further details on the cause of the crash are awaited from the authorities.
