NEW DELHI: The Congress party has reached out to other opposition parties to persuade them to initiate an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amidst the ongoing controversy regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls, according to sources from Congress cited by news agency ANI on Thursday.
“Opposition parties are expected to submit a notice for the impeachment motion against CEC Gyanesh Kumar in both Houses of Parliament; Congress is coordinating this effort. The submission will occur within the next two weeks,” sources within the party said.
Furthermore, Congress has instructed its state units to organize demonstrations outside their respective state Election Commission offices on September 25, calling for the arrest and removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
This action follows reports concerning the SIR of electoral rolls, which illustrated disagreements among Election Commission officials concerning the process. The Indian Express highlighted that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi have consistently raised alarms within the three-member commission about the Special Intensive Revision initiative.
While overseeing the nationwide exercise collectively, both Sandhu and Joshi, as reported, have formally documented objections at least 14 times over the past 10 months, including multiple instances in a single day, concerning decisions made without their input or knowledge.
