Gouri Kishan, Jayaprakash, Jayasudha and Ramzan Muhammed in ‘Love Always’
What would you do if you had the ability to roll back the years and become a younger version of yourself?
That’s the question that Love Always, an upcoming Tamil age-reversal drama series, seeks to answer. Adapted from the South Korean webtoon We’re So Over… Or Not, it blends youthful romance with the complexities of intergenerational relationships.
Featuring an ensemble cast led by Gouri G Kishan, Ramzan Muhammed, Jayaprakash and Jayasudha, Love Always has been directed by Madhumita. In a conversation with The Hindu, the actors chat about their experiences:

Feel-good fare: I have been following the craze for Korean content in films and music, and was thrilled to know that we were doing a long-format adaptation of one such story. What piqued my interest as an actor was playing an old woman in a young person’s body. While she is young, she has to carry the experience and quiet strength of an older person. It has several heartwarming moments, which I feel is good at a time when many crime dramas and thrillers are occupying the space.
The female gaze: Scripts that I usually receive tend to be written from a male gaze. Even when a story is narrated to you, the narrator uses phrases like ‘ungala paatha cute-ah irukanum’, but there are so many layers to a female character. In fact, I get triggered when they say ‘innum cute ah irukanum’ (perform in a way you look cuter) during a shot. With Love Always, the director(Madhumita) brought a strong female gaze into the writing – which I experienced during a scene where I had to portray maternal instincts.
If I could become younger: My first tryst with movies happened when I was still in college. Subsequently, I started working in the film industry. So, part of me thinks I did not live my college phase to the fullest. I wish I could go back and experience campus life again.

Screen presence: I have always been a fan of big stars – I would pick a Mel Gibson or Sylvester Stallone starrer if I was in the DVD library even in my younger days – and have little knowledge of Korean content, which my sons follow. I started watching after I signed Love Always, which kickstarted with a warm meeting withthe director (Madhumita). I was drawn because I realised I was playing a prominent role, which is rare for a character artist whose screen presence in films is limited.
A new experience: Though I have worked on multiple projects, Love Always was the first time we had a reading session. It helped me understand not just my character, but also the other cast and how their roles would shape up as the storyline unfolded. As a character artist, we are usually required to report at a particular time on set, though our actual portion would be shot much later. With Love Always, the planning was meticulous, and that encouraged me to work with renewed commitment.
If I could become younger: I would go back to my days as a businessman and be more successful. For me, that phase was a hard-earned lesson during which I took several wrong decisions. If I could revisit it, I would trust my instincts more.
Jayasudha
A new zone: This is my first web series, and I was afraid to take it up because I am at a stage in my life where my health and comfort zone are my priority. Most of my film work has been with my top film heroes, where the style of working is different from a web-series. Love Always appealed because of the strong role I was playing and the script.
Riding the K-wave: I’m big into Korean content. I binge-watch many series from there, though I have not watched this particular series that Love Always is adapted from. I love romance and action; my recent favourites are Agent Kim Reactivated and Teach You a Lesson. I would like to explore some action-based roles in OTT too, if a good opportunity presents itself.
If I could become younger: I was born at Gosha Hospital on Bells Road, Madras, and my home was located just opposite the Chepauk cricket ground. I played a lot of cricket as a child. If I could turn back the clock, I would pursue my passion for cricket instead of cinema.
