YSRCP MP seeks probe into ‘attempt on life’ of party floor leader Midhun Reddy
YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) MP Maddila Gurumoorthy has urged the intervention of top constitutional and national authorities following an alleged attempt on the life of the party’s Floor Leader in the Lok Sabha, P.V. Midhun Reddy, at Punganur on Friday, the first day of filing nominations for the local body elections.
Appeal to national and state authorities
Gurumoorthy, who represents the Tirupati constituency in the Lok Sabha, submitted formal representations seeking urgent action to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Chief Justice of India, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the Chief Election Commissioner, the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, the State Election Commissioner, and the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission.
In his appeals, the MP called for an impartial investigation into the incident, preservation of CCTV footage and other material evidence, and a thorough review of alleged security lapses surrounding the episode. He also sought adequate protection for Midhun Reddy, his security personnel, and contesting candidates.
Reference to High Court order
Gurumoorthy cited an Andhra Pradesh High Court order dated October 15, 2026, which he said pertains to ensuring the safe filing of nominations and providing protection to candidates facing threats. He underscored the need to uphold the court’s directions in the context of the reported incident at Punganur.
Parliamentary recourse sought
Addressing the matter from a parliamentary standpoint, the YSRCP MP requested Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to consider referring the issue to the Committee of Privileges. He contended that the events warranted examination for potential breaches affecting a sitting Member of Parliament and the conduct of lawful electoral activity.
Call for accountability and free participation
Emphasising the broader implications for the electoral process, Gurumoorthy appealed to the concerned authorities to ensure accountability, protect candidates from intimidation, and uphold their right to participate freely in the local body elections. He urged timely measures to secure the nomination process and safeguard all stakeholders.
The incident and the MP’s representations bring renewed focus to election-related security and the protection of public representatives during critical phases such as nominations.
