Construction of Vaduthala railway overbridge, Perandoor–Vaduthala bridge to begin on October 7
Construction work on two key transport projects in Ernakulam—the Vaduthala railway overbridge and the Perandoor–Vaduthala bridge—will be inaugurated on October 7. Public Works Minister P.K. Basheer will launch the works, which are expected to ease chronic traffic congestion across the city, according to an official statement.
Overview of the projects
The new Perandoor–Vaduthala bridge is planned across the Perandoor Canal to link Vaduthala and Perandoor. Officials said the corridor is designed to enable faster movement from Container Road via Vaduthala to Kaloor, allowing motorists to bypass the often-congested National Highway stretch through the city.
Perandoor–Vaduthala bridge: scope and specifications
The State has accorded administrative sanction of ₹34.24 crore for the Perandoor–Vaduthala bridge. As part of the revised alignment, approximately 34 cents of land in the Perandoor area and 55 cents in Vaduthala have been acquired for the project.
The proposed structure will span a total length of 153.6 metres with an overall width of 11 metres. The deck will feature a 7.5-metre-wide carriageway, flanked by 1.5-metre-wide footpaths on both sides to accommodate pedestrian movement. The completion period set for the project is two years, the statement noted.
Vaduthala railway overbridge: replacing a level crossing
The Vaduthala railway overbridge will come up at railway level crossing No. 69 in the Ernakulam constituency. A financial sanction of ₹91.89 crore has been obtained for the flyover, which has a planned total length of 372.78 metres.
Design details released by authorities indicate a total width of 10.15 metres, comprising a 7.5-metre carriageway and a 1.5-metre-wide footpath on one side. The overbridge is intended to replace the level crossing and improve traffic flow and safety at the location.
Connectivity and safety benefits
Officials said the two projects are intended to reduce congestion and improve safety, particularly by eliminating delays and risks associated with the existing level crossing at Vaduthala. Once completed, the bridges are expected to strengthen connectivity between Vaduthala, Perandoor, Pachalam, Chittoor and neighbouring areas, the communication added.
Next steps
Following the inauguration on October 7, construction will commence on both the Vaduthala railway overbridge and the Perandoor–Vaduthala bridge. While the canal bridge carries a two-year completion timeline, authorities said both projects are aimed at delivering long-term improvements to urban mobility in Ernakulam.
