Gudiyatham Town police in Vellore arrested a 73-year-old trader on Tuesday after seizing 50 kg of gutka from his grocery shop during a surprise inspection ordered by Superintendent of Police N.U. Sivaraman, The Hindu reported.
Police identified the arrested shopkeeper as R. Venkatesan, a resident of Gudiyatham who was running a grocery outlet in Vasantham Nagar.
Officers said a special team, formed on the SP’s orders, conducted checks at grocery outlets across the town and found a large quantity of gutka stored in Venkatesan’s shop.
According to police, Venkatesan procured the gutka from agents in Chittoor to sell at a higher price in retail within the town. A case has been registered and an investigation is under way.
