Nabin to West Bengal BJP ministers: Party should not interfere in government functioning
BJP national president Nitin Nabin, on a two-day organisational tour of West Bengal, has directed party leaders and ministers to maintain a clear separation between the party organisation and the State government, emphasising that ministers must focus on governance while the party strengthens its structure ahead of critical polls.
Visit aims to align party and government roles
Nabin arrived in Kolkata on Sunday and held a series of high-level meetings with the State leadership. His visit, positioned as an exercise to create synergy between the party and the West Bengal government, comes ahead of by-elections to the Rejinagar and Nandigram Assembly constituencies and civic polls expected after the Durga Puja festival.
West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said Nabin was unequivocal in a meeting with the State Council of Ministers. “Ministers should perform their respective roles and that the party organisation should not interfere in the functioning of the Government,” Bhattacharya said, conveying the party chief’s message.
Unlike the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, which the BJP says concentrated power in a single leader who headed both the party and the administration, the current BJP government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is functioning alongside a separately led party organisation under Bhattacharya, party leaders said.
Organisational reshuffle ahead of civic polls
In the run-up to the elections, the State unit undertook a significant organisational reshuffle last week, introducing fresh faces across multiple wings. Appointments were made in the Mahila Morcha, Yuva Morcha, and OBC Morcha, as well as among district presidents and State secretaries.
In line with the party’s “one individual, one post” principle, six prominent ministers—Tapas Roy, Jagannath Chattopadhyay, Agnimitra Paul, Dipak Burman, Shankar Ghosh and Indranil Khan—were relieved of organisational responsibilities to concentrate on their government roles.
Among other changes, actor-turned-politician Anjana Basu was named the new State president of the BJP Mahila Morcha. Locket Chatterjee and Bishnupur MP Soumitra Khan were appointed State general secretaries, while Darjeeling MP Raju Bista was elevated as vice-president. The party retained Sunil Bansal as in-charge of West Bengal and removed Amit Malviya, who had been serving as co-observer of the State. The leadership has recently appointed three new co-observers to bolster oversight.
Poll timeline and priorities
By-polls to the Rejinagar and Nandigram Assembly seats are imminent, with the State BJP also preparing for municipal elections likely in November, after the Durga Pujas. Civic body polls are expected across seven municipal corporations, including the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the Howrah Municipal Corporation.
Nabin praises Adhikari, focuses on jobs and investment
On Monday, Nabin joined Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at the “Yuva Samvad Conclave” in Kolkata. He commended the Chief Minister for the pace at which the new government’s policies were being implemented and pledged a focus on employment generation for young people in the State.
“Around 6,700 companies shut shop in West Bengal during the 15-year Trinamool Congress rule… flight of capital took place during the period. The priority of the BJP Government in the State would be to create an atmosphere to bring in investments,” Nabin said, framing investment-led growth as central to the State’s economic strategy.
Clear lines of accountability
Party insiders said the guidance to keep organisational apparatus and governance distinct is aimed at streamlining decision-making and accountability as the administration turns to delivery-focused priorities, while the party machinery concentrates on mobilisation and candidate preparation ahead of the by-polls and municipal elections.
Outlook
With an overhauled organisational slate, the “one person, one post” rule in effect for key ministers, and a public emphasis on jobs and investment, the BJP’s State unit will now pivot to candidate selection and campaign planning. Nabin’s call for non-interference in government functioning sets the tone for the months ahead, as the party seeks to strengthen its position through both administrative performance and organisational discipline.
