Keralam govt declares public holiday on October 19 for Durgashtami
The Keralam government on Friday, October 16, 2026, declared October 19 a public holiday in connection with the Durgashtami festival, officials said.
Government order issued
The General Administration Department issued the order formalising the holiday for Durgashtami. According to the order, the notification applies to all government and quasi-government offices, public sector undertakings, institutions covered under the Negotiable Instruments Act, and all educational institutions, including professional colleges.
Extended festive break
The Durgashtami holiday precedes the Puja festival holidays on October 20 and 21, creating an extended break for people in the State. With the back-to-back closures, employees and students will have a longer window for festival observances and related travel.
Scope and coverage
The order brings the full spectrum of public offices and institutions under its ambit for October 19. By including establishments covered under the Negotiable Instruments Act and educational institutions at all levels, the directive ensures uniform observance of the Durgashtami holiday across Kerala.
Significance
By aligning the Durgashtami holiday with subsequent Puja festivities, the government’s decision streamlines the holiday calendar for the week, providing clarity for administrative planning and public convenience.
Officials confirmed that the order takes immediate effect for the notified date.
