The Ernakulam Rural cybercrime police have booked a 44-year-old man for allegedly posting threatening and defamatory remarks on social media against Aluva MLA Anwar Sadath on October 20, shortly after his release on bail in a separate case.

According to reporting by The Hindu, the accused, identified as Joby, a native of Mekkad in Nedumbassery, had earlier been arrested and remanded to judicial custody in connection with a robbery near Aluva railway station on September 13. After securing bail, he allegedly uploaded a video claiming he had been framed in the robbery case.

Police said Joby was allegedly provoked by Mr. Sadath’s earlier statement to the media demanding maximum punishment for those accused in the robbery. The cybercrime unit has registered a case on charges including criminal defamation.

The case was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by an Aluva resident.
