Four deep grooves of possible prehistoric significance have been identified near the Banda Juvvi watchtower in Mrugavani National Park at Chilkur, Telangana, prompting calls for scientific investigation and conservation. The finds were reported on October 21, 2026, according to The Hindu.
Historian Satyanarayana Dyavanapalli, who noted the formations following inputs from B. Anand Kumar, Administrative Officer with the Forest Department in Rangareddy district, said the grooves could be associated with Neolithic-period activities dating to around the fifth millennium BCE. Their precise age and function have not yet been determined.
About a kilometre away, near the Forest Trek Park, ochre-coloured rock paintings depicting animals, hunting scenes and geometric designs have also been found. Researchers have not established the paintings’ age or any connection with the grooves.
Mr. Dyavanapalli has urged the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Telangana, to conduct a systematic survey of both sites, document the formations and artwork, and search for evidence of early human activity, including stone tools and pottery fragments.
