We The Leaders founder K. Annamalai on Wednesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre of “manufacturing an enemy” to stay relevant, and criticised its handling of protests by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) in New Delhi. The remarks were made in a lengthy post on X, according to The Hindu.
Annamalai, a former BJP Tamil Nadu president, said the Centre had “forgotten” it had been in power for more than 12 years and continued to cast dissenters as opponents. Citing the response to the CJP’s demonstrations in the capital, he questioned police actions during the detentions and alleged that due process was being undermined.
Referring to a 2011 statement by Narendra Modi, then Gujarat Chief Minister, who had said he would have “gone to Delhi and waged war against the Central government” over the police crackdown on the anti-corruption protest at Ramlila Maidan, Annamalai said Mr. Modi was “absolutely right.”
He contended that today “you could be jailed indefinitely; your surety bonds could be rejected,” and criticised the role of Special Executive Magistrates in preventive bond cases. He added that questioning alleged violations of due process in a democracy was often met with name-calling and accusations of being a “foreign agent.”
Annamalai said he faced “constant attacks” after urging the Centre to hold talks with anti-NEET protesters, but chose to ignore them and focus on Tamil Nadu issues. He remarked that this period “quickly remove[d] the tag of me being a BJP B team and sent to Tamil Nadu as a Dhurandhar.”
He claimed that criticism against him resumed after he began questioning the Delhi Police’s methods during the CJP detentions. Emphasising his current political stance, he wrote that he left the BJP on June 5, 2026.
While stating he did not agree with many of the CJP’s tactics, Annamalai said the group had the right to oppose, argue or protest on issues it considered important. “I would categorically say Yes,” he wrote, when asked if the CJP had such a right.
Annamalai also pointed to a recent Dusshera event in which a cockroach effigy was burned, saying that “free publicity at a National level” for the CJP appeared to be led by BJP MLA Ashok Goel. He questioned whether the BJP was opposing the CJP or amplifying it to split opposition votes, adding that “at this rate, the CJP couldn’t have asked for a better PR team.”
He concluded that it was “very tiring and boring” to see protests and statements against the Central government routinely branded as anti-national or funded by outside forces.
