Cheques of ₹50,000 each were handed to the families of nine police personnel from Nellore district who died in the line of duty in 2026, as Police Commemoration Day was observed at the Nellore Police Parade Grounds on Wednesday amid heavy rain, according to The Hindu.
Nellore District Collector Himanshu Shukla addressed police personnel at the ceremony, saying the sacrifices of officers who laid down their lives while upholding law and order and protecting the public would remain etched in the nation’s history.
“While wearing the uniform is a responsibility, ensuring the safety of the public is a sacred duty. The sacrifices made by the martyrs serve as a constant reminder to police personnel of the importance of dedication, courage, discipline, and commitment,” Nellore Superintendent of Police Ajitha Vejendla said.
In Prakasam district, Collector P. Raja Babu and SP V. Harshavardhan Raju, joined by other officers, paid floral tributes at the Police Martyrs Memorial at the District Police Office in Ongole. Mr. Raja Babu praised policing as a noble public service and noted that the sacrifice of 154 police personnel in the line of duty stands as a testament to their dedication and spirit of self-sacrifice.
Police Commemoration Day was also marked at the Markapuram District Police Office for the first time since the formation of the district. Collector M. Vijaya Sunitha and SP Pankaj Kumar Meena attended and paid homage, with Ms. Vijaya Sunitha underlining the weight of police responsibilities and the demands of duty regardless of weather, often keeping personnel away from their families in service of public protection.
