Samiti urges Centre to appoint Kannadiga as central university VC

Kalyana Karnataka Pratyeka Rajya Horata Samiti has urged the Union government to appoint a Kannadiga as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Karnataka (CUK) at Kadaganchi on the outskirts of Kalaburagi, warning of protests if a candidate from outside the State is chosen. The call was issued in a release, The Hindu reported on October 20, 2026.

Samiti president M.S. Patil Naribol said the university, established in the educationally backward Kalyana Karnataka region, plays a key role in strengthening higher education, research and academic opportunities. He argued that appointing a qualified academician from Karnataka with strong credentials and an understanding of the State’s educational landscape would help the university address local needs and contribute to regional educational advancement.

According to the release, a Vice-Chancellor familiar with Karnataka’s language, culture, socio-economic conditions and regional educational challenges could shape inclusive academic policies, strengthen collaboration with State universities and colleges, encourage research on regional issues and improve access to higher education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Naribol expressed strong reservations about selecting a Vice-Chancellor from outside Karnataka, contending that leadership rooted in the State’s educational priorities would deepen the university’s engagement with local communities and institutions.

The Samiti said the selection process should be guided by academic merit, administrative experience and a commitment to regional development, while giving due consideration to eligible candidates from Karnataka.

Warning against an appointment from another State, Naribol said various organisations would launch an agitation if the Centre proceeded, and he urged the Union government to name a qualified Kannadiga in the larger interest of CUK and the Kalyana Karnataka region.
