Grand illumination displays and crowds dispersing after the Dasara drone show caused extensive traffic gridlock across Mysuru on Saturday night, slowing vehicles to a crawl in key corridors and keeping traffic police engaged until around midnight, The Hindu reported.
The heaviest congestion was concentrated in the city centre around Mysuru Palace and the Dasara Exhibition grounds, where illuminated landmarks drew large turnouts, according to the report. Roads leading to and encircling the Palace saw a steady inflow of vehicles as visitors arrived to view the lit-up Palace, streets and heritage structures, then attempted to leave following the drone show at the Torchlight Parade Grounds.
Traffic also swelled near the railway station and the Sub-urban Bus Terminal as private vehicles converged on major transport hubs amid the festive rush. Cars and two-wheelers formed long queues, and movement slowed markedly on several stretches.
The Hindu said the situation posed a significant operational challenge for traffic personnel, who worked to clear bottlenecks late into the night. Congestion persisted across multiple locations, including around 11.30 p.m. on Irwin Road.
The snarls underscored the strain on Mysuru’s road network during the Dasara season, particularly on nights when large-crowd attractions coincide with citywide illumination. With the light displays continuing to draw visitors, managing traffic around the Palace and other popular venues remains a central task for police through the festival period.
According to the report, the next two days are expected to be even more challenging for traffic management as the Dasara finale approaches.
