Nellore SP to deploy 1,500 police personnel for local body polls

Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajitha Vejendla has announced a comprehensive security plan for the upcoming local body elections in SPSR Nellore district, with the deployment of 1,500 police personnel across key locations. The district police have also stationed 220 officers at 44 nomination centres to ensure the nomination process proceeds without incident.

Security plan and deployment

Detailing the arrangements, SP Vejendla said 44 nomination centres have been identified for focused security: 20 within Nellore city, 13 in Atmakur and 11 in Buchireddypalem. “The district police administration is fully prepared with stringent security arrangements to ensure that the upcoming local body elections are conducted in a peaceful, free, and fair manner. Adequate security and monitoring measures have been put in place at the nomination centres to ensure that the nomination filing process proceeds peacefully and the public do not face any issues,” she said.

Proactive measures and sensitive zones

The police have mapped sensitive and highly sensitive locations and will scale up deployment in these areas as needed. “As part of this, sensitive and highly sensitive areas have been identified, and additional forces will be deployed in these locations based on the specific situation. Police officials have been instructed to intensify proactive measures, such as continuous patrolling, vehicle checks, and surveillance of the movements of suspicious individuals, to ensure that no untoward incidents occur,” the SP said.

As part of the run-up to the polls, officers have been conducting intensified field work. On Thursday, police carried out a cordon-and-search operation in the Vedayapalem area of Nellore, reflecting the stepped-up district-wide vigilance.

District-wide operations and public outreach

SP Vejendla noted that since the beginning of the year, the district police have conducted approximately 300 cordon-and-search operations (CASO) aimed at controlling crime, curbing anti-social activities, tracking the movements of suspicious individuals and vehicles, and ensuring public safety. In addition to operational measures, the police have organised more than 4,000 awareness programmes across the district to engage with residents and reinforce the importance of maintaining peace during the election period.

Preventive legal actions and surveillance

To deter potential disturbances, the police have initiated ‘bind-over’ proceedings against 874 individuals across the district. The SP said the department will maintain strict surveillance on individuals with a history of involvement in election-related conflicts as well as other habitual troublemakers, with the goal of preventing flare-ups before they occur.

Advisory to parties and the public

SP Vejendla urged all stakeholders to cooperate with law enforcement and adhere strictly to the election code of conduct. She cautioned political parties, candidates and their supporters against any actions that could disrupt public order. The police, she warned, would take strict legal action against those engaged in intimidation, conflicts or illegal activities during the elections.

With personnel deployment, targeted monitoring in sensitive zones, large-scale outreach and sustained enforcement measures, the district police say they are focused on creating conditions for peaceful and orderly local body polls in SPSR Nellore.
