AIADMK Turns 55: Palaniswami Urges Unity and Commitment Among Cadres

Palaniswami calls for unity, commitment among cadres as AIADMK enters 55th year

As the AIADMK marks the start of its 55th year, party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Friday, October 16, 2026, issued a rallying call for unity and renewed commitment among cadres, urging them to prepare to defeat “new political challenges, anti-democratic forces, and an anti-people rule” through democratic means.

A call to consolidate the ranks

In a four-page open letter addressed to party workers, Mr. Palaniswami underscored the indivisibility of the organisation and its grassroots support. “For me, the party and cadres are not two different things. The party is my breath and cadres are my pulse,” he wrote, crediting the rank-and-file with enabling him to discharge his responsibilities as general secretary.

He framed the appeal as a reaffirmation of the AIADMK’s founding ideals and a response to what he described as persistent attempts by rivals and “traitors” to destabilise the party over the decades. Despite such efforts, he said, the AIADMK had “marched ahead with the massive support of its cadres by crushing conspiracies.”

Election performance and message to supporters

Pointing to the party’s performance in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Mr. Palaniswami said the AIADMK’s public support remained resilient notwithstanding adverse political winds. He noted that the AIADMK alliance collectively secured over 1.35 crore votes, and AIADMK candidates won 47 seats, “despite unusual political circumstances and high influence of glamour-driven politics.”

Taking aim at what he termed transient political trends, he said: “Glamour-driven politics [kavarchi arasiyal] is like a bubble and it could burst anytime. But our party, built by principles and sacrifices, is a colossal public movement that can live through the test of times.”

Sharpened criticism of the ruling TVK

Mr. Palaniswami levelled strong criticism at the ruling TVK, accusing it of neglecting governance priorities in favour of attempts to undermine the AIADMK. He alleged that the government had engaged in “horse trading” and that law and order had deteriorated under its watch.

“Instead of resolving challenges facing the people, the rulers [TVK-led government] are focusing on how to weaken the AIADMK, how to get its [AIADMK] MLAs through horse-trading,” he charged. Emphasising the party’s ideological underpinnings, he added: “This movement did not come together for power but for principles.”

Invoking legacy and discipline

Reaffirming the party’s lineage, Mr. Palaniswami said AIADMK cadres, having been trained under the leadership of former Chief Ministers M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) and Jayalalithaa, had weathered many political battles and would not succumb to conspiracies. He recalled the party’s founding moment, noting that MGR was expelled by an “evil force” from the DMK founded by C.N. Annadurai, leading to the AIADMK’s creation in 1972 and its first electoral victory in 1977.

As the AIADMK steps into its 55th year, he also highlighted a series of achievements that he said had benefited the people of Tamil Nadu over the decades, presenting them as evidence of the party’s enduring connection with the electorate and its governance record.

Unity as the path forward

Throughout the letter, the AIADMK general secretary returned to the theme of unity and discipline within the organisation. He positioned the party’s cadres as both the engine and the guardians of its future, calling on them to remain steadfast, reject inducements, and approach upcoming political contests with cohesion and conviction.

While acknowledging the pressures of a rapidly changing political environment, he urged workers to trust in the party’s principles and to rely on democratic mobilisation to counter what he described as anti-democratic tendencies. The implicit message: that organisational strength and ideological clarity would serve as the AIADMK’s bulwark against political volatility and alleged attempts at destabilisation.

Significance of the message

Mr. Palaniswami’s letter, timed with the AIADMK’s anniversary milestone, doubles as both a retrospective and a roadmap—celebrating historical resilience while pressing for renewed solidarity in the face of present-day challenges. By coupling electoral data from 2026 with pointed criticisms of the ruling dispensation, he signalled that the party’s immediate focus will be on consolidating its base, defending its legislators from alleged poaching attempts, and framing the political contest as one of principles versus expediency.

As the AIADMK enters its 55th year, the party leadership’s emphasis on unity, discipline and democratic action sets the tone for its next phase of political engagement in Tamil Nadu.
