Applications open for Kanavu Aerial Workshop for women photographers in Tamil Nadu

Chennai Photo Biennale Foundation’s Kanavu Fellowship and Kala Collective, in partnership with Chennai Drone Academy, have opened applications for the Kanavu Aerial Workshop, a 10-day residential training programme in Chennai scheduled for February next year. The workshop is open to women photographers aged 18 and above from across Tamil Nadu and blends technical drone operation with visual storytelling.

Programme overview

Designed to expand creative and professional opportunities for women photographers, the workshop integrates intensive technical training with practice-led image-making. The first six days are dedicated to learning to fly drones and preparing for the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Remote Pilot Certification. The final four days focus on aerial photography and videography, guiding participants to create images and videos they can add to their professional portfolios.

Eligibility and priority

Applications are open to women aged 18 and above residing in Tamil Nadu. Organisers note that preference will be given to previous Kanavu Fellowship participants, members of the Kala Collective, and applicants from low-income or marginalised backgrounds.

Fees, funding and support

The fee for the programme is ₹30,000, which includes training, hostel accommodation and the DGCA certification component. Participants may pay the fee in two instalments. A limited number of fully funded places are available for those who cannot afford the fee.

Applicants also have the option to contribute ₹60,000, which covers their own participation and funds a scholarship place for another woman.

Venue and accommodation

The workshop will be held at Chennai Drone Academy in Edapalayam, Chennai. Hostel accommodation and vegetarian meals will be provided for participants who stay on campus.

Schedule and key dates

The programme is planned for February, with the exact dates to be confirmed by mid-December based on the availability of selected applicants.

Applications close on 30 November 2026.
