On Makar Sankranti, millions of pilgrims gathered at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj to participate in the first 'Amrit Snan' of the Mahakumbh 2025. The Naga Sadhus, from 13 different akharas, took the first sacred dip, followed by the general public. This ritual, marking the primary attraction of the Maha Kumbh Mela, is deeply rooted in religious tradition. Naga Sadhus, considered disciples of Lord Shiva, have always been given the privilege of the first bath due to their spiritual devotion. The Amrit Snan continues to be a significant event in the festival, with several more sacred dips scheduled throughout the month.

China has reported a decline in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections, easing global concerns over a recent surge in cases. Health officials clarified that HMPV is not a new virus, having been present in human populations for decades. The rise in recent cases is linked to improved detection methods. While the number of patients in emergency clinics has increased, medical resources remain sufficient, with cases in northern provinces, particularly among children, now on the decline. The World Health Organization has not reported any unusual outbreaks.

The unrest is driven by allegations of irregularities in the BPSC Combined Competitive Exam held in December 2024. The protests also coincided with Prashant Kishor's ongoing 'fast unto death' for the same cause. Despite the chaos, the police intervened, restoring order and normal traffic movement in the city.
