Violence Erupts in Nagpur Amid Aurangzeb row, 30 Injured, 65 Rioters Detained

By The Sampadak Express

Violent clashes broke out in Nagpur on Monday evening following protests by Hindu outfits demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Maharashtra’s Sambhaji Nagar. The unrest led to widespread violence in the Mahal and Hansapuri areas, resulting in over 30 injuries, the detention of 65 rioters, and significant property damage.

Clashes and Vandalism

The clashes began after protests organized by groups like Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), who have been vocal in calling for the demolition of the Aurangzeb tomb. Tensions escalated when a photo was burned, which led to stone-throwing and a gathering of people. By 8:30 pm, the violence intensified as rioters set fire to 25-30 bikes and two to three cars, while incidents of stone-pelting were reported.

Later in the evening, a second round of clashes erupted in the Hansapuri area between 10:30 pm and 11:30 pm. Mobs vandalized several homes and a clinic, while setting more vehicles ablaze. Police were quickly deployed, and additional units from Nagpur rural police and cyber police were called in to handle the unrest and prevent the spread of rumors.

Police Response and Measures

Authorities imposed Section 144 in Nagpur, restricting movement and urging citizens to avoid stepping out unnecessarily. Nagpur Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Singal confirmed that the situation was under control, though combing operations are ongoing to apprehend the culprits. “We are taking strict action against those spreading rumors or indulging in violence,” Dr. Singal said.

The violence triggered strong reactions from political leaders. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed for calm, urging citizens to cooperate with authorities. Meanwhile, Nagpur MP Nitin Gadkari asked residents to remain calm and ignore rumors, adding that the government would take action against those responsible.

Political Reactions

Maharashtra Congress chief Harshvardhan Sapkal criticized the state home department, blaming it for the failure to manage the situation. He also accused certain ministers of making provocative speeches, which he claimed escalated tensions.

On the other hand, Maharashtra BJP chief and state minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule urged the public to maintain peace, avoid rumors, and support the police in their efforts to restore order. He emphasized the need for political unity to prevent further unrest and ensure the safety of Nagpur’s residents.

Eyewitness Accounts and Property Damage

Eyewitnesses reported widespread damage to public property, with vehicles set on fire and debris scattered across affected areas. Videos circulating on social media showed the chaotic scenes, including a JCB machine set on fire during the protests. Police and fire officials swiftly responded to contain the violence, using tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowd.

Investigation and Legal Action

Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and other video evidence to identify those involved in the violence. An FIR is being registered, and the police are determined to take action against the perpetrators. The situation is being closely monitored, with additional personnel deployed to prevent further unrest.

Rumors and Clarification

An earlier version of the story mentioned that Muslim groups alleged a cloth with ‘kalma’ was burned during the protest, which was later confirmed to be a rumor. Police have clarified that the incident was falsely reported and was a key factor in escalating tensions in the city.

As of now, the situation remains under control, with police efforts focused on maintaining law and order and preventing further clashes. Authorities have warned against the spread of rumors that could further stoke unrest in the region.
