In a sensational case that has stunned locals in Aligarh, a woman who allegedly eloped with her daughter’s fiancé just a week before the wedding has been taken into police custody. While police claim they arrested her, the couple insists they surrendered voluntarily.
The woman, identified as Apna Devi, reportedly confessed her love for the man—her daughter’s would-be husband—but denied allegations that she fled with cash and jewellery. Speaking to police, she said, “I didn’t take any money or valuables. I just want to live with the man I love.”
The incident unfolded shortly before the daughter’s wedding, scheduled for April 16. The bride’s father, Jitendra Kumar, accused his wife of eloping with the groom, Sushant, and alleged that she took ₹3 lakh in cash and jewellery worth over ₹5 lakh that had been saved for the wedding.
However, Apna Devi offered a different account. She claimed her husband had been abusive and had even dared her to run away with the young man after repeatedly questioning her character. “He used to assault me and humiliate me,” she said. The couple reportedly stayed in a hotel in Sitamarhi, Bihar, and even reached the Nepal border before returning.
Sushant had left his home on Sunday morning, telling his father not to contact him as he was “embarking on a long journey.” When his father contacted the bride’s family, it was discovered that both Sushant and the bride’s mother were missing.
Adding to the controversy, local police revealed that this is not the first time Sushant has eloped. According to their investigation, he had previously run away with another woman from a neighboring village about a year ago. That incident ended quietly, as the woman’s family chose not to pursue legal action.
Police are currently investigating all claims, including the allegations of theft and assault. No formal charges have been announced as of now, but the case continues to stir debate across the region.
