A shocking incident took place late Thursday night at the Sonbarsa Community Health Centre (CHC) in Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh, where a pregnant woman gave birth on the hospital premises, just outside the locked facility. The case drew widespread attention after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
According to reports, the woman, a resident of Laxman Chapra, arrived at the CHC around 1 AM experiencing intense labor pains. While the main gate of the center was open, all rooms were locked, and the staff, including doctors and healthcare workers, were reportedly at their residential quarters. The woman’s family tried to call for assistance, but no staff could be located in time. Before she could be taken inside, the woman delivered her baby on the floor near the entrance of the hospital.
Yuvraj Singh, a resident of Mirzapur who was also at the center for medical reasons, recorded the incident and shared the video on social media, tagging the state’s Health Minister.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Sanjeev Verman confirmed awareness of the incident and stated that an investigation committee has been formed. “The delivery occurred within the CHC premises but outside a closed room. Staff arrived only after the delivery was over,” he said. The CMO added that strict instructions have been sent to all PHCs and CHCs across the district, emphasizing that no staff member or doctor should neglect their duty. He warned of strict action against any further negligence.
Eyewitness Yuvraj Singh reiterated that no medical personnel or Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) were present at the time. “Such irresponsible behavior must be dealt with sternly,” he said.
The investigation report is expected soon, following which appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible.
