Prayagraj Police Enforces Prohibitory Orders till February 28 for Mahakumbh: Key Details You Should Know

In preparation for the upcoming Mahakumbh Mela and other significant events, authorities in Prayagraj have imposed prohibitory orders to ensure public safety and maintain law and order across the district. The orders, effective from January 16 to February 28, 2025, are a response to the large gatherings expected during the Mela and concurrent events such as religious festivals and competitive exams.

The prohibitory measures were announced by Prayagraj’s Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) on Friday. The ACP highlighted that these steps are necessary to prevent disturbances and ensure peaceful celebrations of the Mela and the upcoming festivals, including Republic Day, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchami, Sant Ravidas Jayanti, Maghi Purnima, Valentine’s Day, Shab-e-Barat, and Mahashivratri, among others.

Key Events During the Period

The prohibitory orders are in place due to the significant number of events scheduled over the next several weeks, with a focus on maintaining public order amid the Mahakumbh Mela. Several religious observances and competitive exams will also take place during this time, raising concerns about potential disruptions from anti-social elements.

Given the communal sensitivity of the district, the ACP stated that the risk of disturbances from disruptive forces is high. The enforcement of these orders aims to ensure peaceful and uninterrupted celebrations and examinations.

Details of the Prohibitory Orders

The prohibitory orders include several key restrictions aimed at safeguarding public safety and preventing disruptions:

Public Gatherings and Protests: No individual or group is permitted to organize public events, protests, or processions without prior approval from the competent authority. Protests and gatherings are prohibited outside designated protest sites in Civil Lines.

Drone Usage: Drone use is banned across Prayagraj, except for official purposes by law enforcement or government agencies.

Weapons and Harmful Items: The carrying of weapons such as firearms, sticks, lathis, or any harmful items is strictly prohibited within the district, except for law enforcement officers.

Provocative Speech and Media: Delivering speeches or publishing materials that could incite communal tension or hurt religious sentiments is prohibited. The spread of misleading or provocative content on social media is also banned.

Disruptions to Public and Commercial Life: Any activity that disrupts the functioning of essential services, including closing businesses, blocking traffic, or interfering with transport services, is forbidden.

Protection of Property: Damaging public or private property is strictly prohibited, as is any disruption in the distribution of essential goods and services.
