Opposition likely to bring no confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla: Sources

By Sampadak Express Political Bureau | February 9, 2026

In a major escalation of the ongoing parliamentary standoff, sources close to the INDIA bloc have confirmed that the Opposition is actively planning to bring a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. This development marks a significant flashpoint in the Budget Session, threatening to deepen the divide between the Treasury Benches and the Opposition coalition.

According to exclusive information obtained by Sampadak Express, the decision was solidified during a strategy meeting held at the chamber of the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Monday morning. The Opposition leaders are aggrieved by what they term as “partisan conduct” by the Chair, particularly the alleged refusal to allow LoP Rahul Gandhi to speak during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address.

The Tipping Point: “Concrete Information” Controversy

The friction reached a boiling point last week when Speaker Om Birla made a startling claim. As reported by Sampadak Express previously, the Speaker announced that he had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to attend the Lower House on Thursday. Birla cited “concrete information” that opposition MPs were planning an “unexpected act” or a physical confrontation at the Prime Minister’s seat.

Senior Congress leaders dismissed these allegations as “baseless” and an “absolute lie” designed to shield the PM from facing the House. The Opposition argues that the Presiding Officer is systematically denying space to dissenting voices, a sentiment that has now crystallized into this proposed no-trust vote.

Procedural Hurdles and Timing

While the political intent is clear, the procedural path is complex. Sampadak Express analysts point out that a resolution for the removal of the Speaker requires a mandatory 14-day notice period under the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha. Sources tell Sampadak Express that the motion is likely to be formally submitted during the second leg of the Budget Session to ensure compliance with these legislative requirements.

The motion is expected to cite multiple grievances. Beyond the silencing of the LoP, Sampadak Express understands that the notice will likely mention the suspension of eight opposition MPs and alleged “derogatory remarks” made against women parliamentarians.

Sampadak Express Analysis: A Symbolic Battle?

Although the ruling NDA coalition holds a comfortable majority in the Lower House, making the passage of such a motion numerically impossible, the move is seen as a potent symbolic protest. Political observers speaking to Sampadak Express suggest that this strategy is aimed at highlighting the “erosion of democratic norms” within the parliamentary framework.

As the Lok Sabha faces repeated adjournments amid slogan-shouting and protests, the legislative business for the Union Budget 2026-27 hangs in the balance. Sampadak Express will continue to track every twist and turn in this high-stakes political drama.
