NCW Condemns Derogatory Remarks Against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, Calls Her a ‘Proud Daughter of the Nation’

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has strongly criticized derogatory comments allegedly made by Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a decorated officer in the Indian Army. The Commission called the remarks “extremely unfortunate” and emphasized the need to respect women serving in the armed forces.

Without naming any individual, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar voiced her dismay over the controversy, which has drawn widespread public anger. “It is extremely unfortunate that such statements are being made by responsible individuals. They are not only derogatory and unacceptable but also an insult to the dignity of women and our nation’s daughters who are protecting our country,” she stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Rahatkar praised Colonel Qureshi for her courage and commitment, calling her “a proud daughter of the nation” and “a sister to all Indians who love their country.” She urged for strong condemnation of any such remarks that undermine the role of women in national defense.

The controversy stems from a video released by the Congress party, in which Minister Vijay Shah is allegedly heard making offensive comments: “Jinhone humari betiyon ke sindoor ujade the… humne unhiki behen bhej kar ke unki aisi ki taisi karwayi,” referring to Operation Sindoor.

Following public backlash, Shah issued a statement saying, “If my words have hurt society and religion, then I am ready to apologise ten times.”

Colonel Sofiya Qureshi was part of the tri-services delegation that addressed the media on Operation Sindoor, a retaliatory mission launched by India after a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. She was joined by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh during the briefing.

The NCW has reiterated its commitment to protecting the dignity of women in uniform and called for responsible conduct from public figures.
