Punjab Kings’ star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal etched his name into the record books once again, taking the first hat-trick of the 2025 Indian Premier League season during a thrilling encounter against Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday. Chahal’s remarkable feat came in the 19th over, where he bagged four wickets, dismantling CSK’s lower order and shifting the momentum firmly in PBKS’ favor.
The over began with CSK skipper MS Dhoni smashing a six, but Chahal bounced back immediately, dismissing the veteran on the very next delivery. Deepak Hooda managed to squeeze out a couple of runs before falling for just 2, caught by Priyansh Arya. Anshul Kamboj was next to go, clean bowled for a duck, followed by Noor Ahmad, who attempted a big shot but was caught by Marco Jansen in the deep, completing Chahal’s hat-trick and finishing with four wickets in the over.
Speaking after the innings, Chahal expressed his delight: “Feeling very good, it was the 19th over and Mahi bhai was at the crease, so I knew it could go either way. The plan was to attack the stumps, vary the lines, and play with the batter’s mind. It worked perfectly. I had planned that celebration if I ever took a five-for or a hat-trick – it came from the memes!”
This was Chahal’s second hat-trick in IPL history, his first coming in 2022 while playing for Rajasthan Royals against Kolkata Knight Riders. In that game, he dismissed Venkatesh Iyer, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Mavi, and Pat Cummins in a single over to secure a memorable win for his side.
Chahal’s late-over blitz not only restricted CSK to a manageable total but also marked the first hat-trick in the IPL since 2023, reaffirming his reputation as one of the league’s premier match-winners.
