The future of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 remains uncertain as tensions between India and Pakistan intensify. On Thursday, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal stated that a decision on the continuation of the tournament will depend on further assessment of the security situation.
Dhumal, said, “We are reviewing the situation right now,” following a missile and drone attack reportedly launched by Pakistan, which led to the abrupt suspension of the IPL match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamshala. The stadium was swiftly evacuated after the town experienced a sudden blackout.
No official directive has been issued by the Indian government so far, Dhumal noted, but he emphasized that safety and national interest remain the top priorities.
The situation rapidly escalated Thursday evening when Indian air defense systems intercepted multiple airborne threats targeting regions in Jammu, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Air raid sirens blared, power grids were temporarily shut down, and security alerts were issued in several cities across northern India.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed the attack originated from Pakistan, marking a significant escalation in hostilities just a day after India launched ‘Operation Sindoor’a precision military operation aimed at neutralizing terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). This retaliatory move followed the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam.
With tensions continuing to rise along the western front, the IPL’s future this season hangs in the balance. Organizers, government authorities, and security agencies are expected to make a formal decision in the coming days based on evolving ground conditions.
