A devastating thunderstorm that swept through Delhi early Friday morning claimed the lives of a woman and her three children after their house collapsed in Dwarka’s Jafarpur Kalan area. The woman’s husband, Vijay, sustained critical injuries and is currently receiving treatment at RTR Hospital.
According to Delhi Police, the incident occurred around 5:26 a.m. when a tree, uprooted by powerful winds, fell onto their one-room house situated on farmland, leading to its collapse. Emergency services, including two fire tenders, rushed to the scene and pulled the family from the debris.
Jyoti, 26, and her three children were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. Vijay remains under medical care, battling serious injuries.In a separate incident in Delhi’s Chawla area, a portion of a house collapsed, trapping several individuals. Rescue efforts by the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) and traffic police are currently underway.
The thunderstorm, accompanied by heavy rain and squally winds, caused widespread damage across the capital. Trees were uprooted in several areas, including AIIMS, Safdarjung, and Aurobindo Marg, damaging houses and vehicles. Intense rainfall also led to severe waterlogging in key areas such as Karol Bagh, Rohini, ITO, Chandni Chowk, and Mayur Vihar.
Flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport were also disrupted, prompting airlines to issue travel advisories and delay alerts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had initially issued a red alert for Delhi, later downgrading it to orange. The department warned of continued severe weather through the early hours, with thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rainfall expected to persist.
Emergency services continue to work across affected areas, as Delhi recovers from the unexpected fury of nature.
