With just three days left for the Delhi assembly elections, the capital witnessed a day of intense political campaigning as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Congress ramped up their efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge each launched sharp attacks on their rivals, setting the stage for a fierce electoral battle.
The campaigning for the February 5 assembly election will officially end on Monday evening, with the vote counting scheduled for February 8. The election will determine the future of the 70-seat Delhi assembly, which is witnessing a triangular contest between the BJP, AAP, and Congress.
BJP’s Intense Push: 80 Rallies Across Delhi
On Sunday, the BJP organized 80 rallies across Delhi in a final push to woo voters. The party’s efforts were bolstered by several high-profile Union ministers, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chirag Paswan, and five BJP chief ministers, who participated in rallies targeting the ruling AAP government.
At a rally in RK Puram, Prime Minister Modi took a direct aim at AAP, accusing the party of making false promises and engaging in corruption. Modi claimed that AAP had ruined Delhi for the last 11 years, and asserted that only a “double-engine government” would ensure the city’s growth and development moving forward.
In a post on social media platform X, Modi further emphasized, “Delhiites trust only the BJP because it does what it says. The overwhelming turnout at RK Puram proves that the ‘lotus’ will bloom in Delhi.”
Kejriwal Hits Back: Accuses BJP of Intimidation
AAP leader and former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal fired back at the BJP, accusing the party of resorting to “hooliganism” in an attempt to influence the February 5 elections. Kejriwal claimed that BJP workers were threatening and physically assaulting AAP supporters in the New Delhi constituency, where he is contesting against BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Congress’ Sandeep Dikshit.
Kejriwal claimed, “Our leaders and supporters are being threatened to join the BJP or face arrest and attacks. But we cannot be scared. Delhi will not tolerate these intimidation tactics.”
In response to the alleged threats, Kejriwal launched a new social media campaign titled #AmitShahKiGoondagardi. The campaign saw multiple posts, videos, and messages from verified AAP accounts, including Kejriwal’s own, along with Delhi CM Atishi and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, among others.
Kharge’s Sharp Criticism: Modi and Kejriwal Both ‘Liars’
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also weighed in on the political slugfest, launching a blistering attack on both Prime Minister Modi and Arvind Kejriwal. At a public meeting in Mustafabad, Kharge labeled Modi as the “chief of liars” (jhoothon ka sardar), and accused Kejriwal of being his “baap” (father) in the art of deception.
Kharge, addressing a gathering of Congress supporters, criticized Kejriwal for his broken promises and alleged lies to the public. He pointed to Kejriwal’s early days as an anti-corruption crusader, claiming that the AAP leader had deceived Anna Hazare and misled voters in his bid for political power.“
Kejriwal made false promises and then targeted the Congress. He tried to defame us, and now he is using the broom symbol to get back into power. He once claimed to fight corruption, but he deceived Anna Hazare and lied to the people to win their votes,” Kharge said.
The Congress President also mocked Kejriwal’s rise to power, saying, “Kejriwal used to travel in a small car, but now he has a convoy of 10-20 cars. This is his so-called simplicity. The same person who once claimed to be a common man now lives in luxury.”
Kharge also took a dig at Prime Minister Modi, saying, “Modi is the ‘chief of liars,’ and Kejriwal has become his master in telling lies.”
No Immediate Reactions from BJP or AAP
As the political battle intensified, neither the BJP nor AAP offered immediate reactions to Kharge’s comments. The Congress leader’s accusations are expected to add more fuel to the already heated debate ahead of the upcoming elections.
What’s at Stake?
With the Delhi assembly election just days away, the stakes are high for all three major parties. AAP is looking to retain its hold on the capital after winning a landslide victory in 2020, while the BJP is eager to make a comeback after a string of defeats in the city. Congress, which has been marginalized in recent years, is hoping to regain some ground by capitalizing on the dissatisfaction with both the BJP and AAP.
As the election approaches, voters in Delhi are set to decide the fate of the 70-member legislative assembly, with key issues such as corruption, governance, development, and security dominating the campaign trail.
With the campaigning set to conclude on Monday evening, all eyes will be on the final push by each party, as they attempt to sway voters ahead of the February 5 election.
