The Ministry of Defence on October 21, 2026, signed a contract worth about ₹770 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in New Delhi to procure Improved Low Level Light Weight Radars (LLLR-I) for the Indian Army’s air defence, targeting threats including drones, according to details reported by The Hindu.
The signing took place in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, the Ministry said. The LLLR-I is designed to detect and track fighter-sized aircraft as well as mini and micro drones, and can prioritise aerial targets to help forces respond more effectively to unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
The procurement forms part of the government’s ongoing effort to indigenise air defence platforms and expand domestic defence manufacturing. The Ministry said the programme is expected to benefit the wider defence industrial base, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
According to the Ministry, the acquisition aligns with the government’s Viksit Bharat @2047 vision and is intended to strengthen a resilient, self-reliant and globally competitive defence industry.
