‘Turtle Walker’: Zoya Akhtar-Backed Documentary Pays Tribute to Satish Bhaskar’s Life and Legacy
In a compelling look at marine conservation, director Taira Malaney recalls a transformative night in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands while filming her documentary, Turtle Walker. During the shoot, she witnessed the remarkable journey of an olive ridley sea turtle, whose relentless digging and eventual egg-laying over nine hours became a poignant memory. As dawn broke, the coastline was alive with the hustle of baby turtles making their way to the ocean, showcasing both the beauty and fragility of marine life. “It was a beautiful sunrise, and we sat around these forest rangers, people who work tirelessly to protect these animals every day. It was really special to witness this,” she shared.
Background on the Film
Turtle Walker is rich with breathtaking visuals, showcasing marine life and the extraordinary ecosystems that house them. The narrative is not just about the wildlife; it forms a bridge connecting human stories to the conservation of nature. “It was really important to reach audiences who have not had exposure to the beauty of marine life that we have in our country,” said Malaney, who is also the founder of Emaho Films. She believes that fostering a sense of wonder is crucial for encouraging conservation efforts. “I think that the first step towards wanting to protect something is to feel connected to it,” she emphasized.
Set to premiere this week on Animal Planet, the film draws heavily on the life of Satish Bhaskar, an influential figure in sea turtle conservation, known as ‘Mr. Sea Turtle’. Malaney articulated her vision: “I thought that through Satish’s story, people can connect with the animal and the ecosystems they call home.”
Key Developments in the Film’s Creation
The documentary is part of Animal Planet’s India: Epic Wild Stories anthology. Sai Abishek, Head of Factual Entertainment, Lifestyle & Kids at Skydance, remarked on the film’s uniqueness: “Within this anthology, Turtle Walker stood out for the way it brings together an extraordinary personal journey and a larger story about marine conservation.” He praised Bhaskar’s extensive work along India’s coastlines, stating that his deep connection with sea turtles offers invaluable insights into the lives of those dedicated to wildlife preservation.
Zoya Akhtar, co-founder of Tiger Baby Films, highlighted Bhaskar’s immense contribution: “His indomitable spirit saved the enigmatic creatures from extinction and reminds us how precious our planet is.” She noted that he meticulously walked nearly every inch of India’s coastline to establish protective measures for sea turtle nesting sites.
Context: The Legacy of Satish Bhaskar
Taira Malaney first learned about Bhaskar’s conservation work after moving to the Andaman Islands in 2013, where she was involved with a marine conservation organization. Stories of legendary figures like Bhaskar and fellow conservationist Romulus Whitaker captivated her interest. Upon returning to mainland India, she was inspired to find Bhaskar after coming across an article detailing his remarkable journey to locate and protect nesting sites for sea turtles.
During her pursuit, Malaney discovered that Bhaskar resided merely an hour away from her home in Goa. Their meetings gradually developed into a deep collaboration built on trust. “We spent a lot of years just doing research interviews, spending time together, just learning his stories and sharing meals,” she reflected, acknowledging the extensive process behind crafting a meaningful documentary.
Film Production Insights
Turtle Walker employs a mix of cinematic recreations, archival photos, and firsthand accounts to narrate Bhaskar’s story. Due to the lack of archival footage, Malaney and her team creatively utilized the skills of her friend, artist Rohan Joglekar, who portrayed a younger Bhaskar in flashbacks. “The entire story is scripted around one long interview, which forms the backbone of the film,” explained Malaney. Bhaskar himself played a crucial role in these recreations, guiding Joglekar in depicting his past experiences.
Despite the film’s success, including accolades such as the Grand Teton Award at the Jackson Wild Media Awards, it carries a bittersweet note. Both Satish and his wife, Brenda, passed away in 2022 and 2023, respectively, before seeing the film’s completion. “He did see a longer version of the film, but not in its fully-finished form. I am very grateful, however, that he could see this longer version and give us his input,” said Malaney, who expressed gratitude for the positive feedback received from Bhaskar’s family after they watched it.
Final Reflection
As Turtle Walker highlights the importance of preserving nesting sites and showcases the resilience of turtles, who rebounded post-2004 tsunami, Malaney hopes it empowers viewers to appreciate India’s marine biodiversity and inspires them to take on challenges, much like Bhaskar did. “Having a story like that is very important in today’s day and age. Despite the challenges we are facing with the environment, it is quite inspiring to see what a person can do to make an impact,” she affirmed.
Turtle Walker is set to air on October 19 at 9 PM on Animal Planet, inviting audiences to engage with the beauty and significance of marine conservation through the lens of a life dedicated to its protection.
