Seo Kangjun and Ahn Eun-jin Discuss ‘A Love Other Than Yours’, Navigating Modern Relationships

K-Dramas often shy away from the messy, uncertain realities of contemporary relationships. However, “A Love Other Than Yours” boldly tackles these themes as it follows Namgoong-ho and Lee Mi-do, a couple attempting to navigate the complexities of a decade-long partnership riddled with challenges. As viewers grapple with the fate of this couple amidst external pressures, the series has sparked intense discussions on social media as it unfolds, capturing the attention of audiences with its raw portrayal of modern love.

Behind the Scenes: The Actors’ Insights

In an exclusive interview ahead of the show’s premiere in September, Seo Kangjun and Ahn Eun-jin, the stars of “A Love Other Than Yours,” shared their thoughts on the series and its exploration of relationships. Joining them are Lee Joo-ahn and Jo-aram, who also contribute to the show’s complex narrative.

Kangjun, who plays Namgoong-ho, mentioned the efforts he made to authentically represent a couple deeply entwined in each other’s lives. “I kept trying to tell myself that I know Mi-do 100%. ‘Her making that face means this. She must be feeling this in her head right now,’” he explained, emphasizing the psychological nuances he incorporated while developing the character’s relationship. “I tried to assume things as much as possible, thinking I knew her well. I know everything about her.”

Ahn Eun-jin, who portrays Lee Mi-do, reflected on the intricacies of her character’s development, revealing her initial discomfort with how Mi-do takes Namgoong for granted early in the show. “Giving orders to him, making him do all the chores… I think this shows how comfortable she’s gotten with him, and how much time they’ve spent together,” she remarked, highlighting a dynamic that many couples may find relatable.

Exploring Personal Growth Through Work and Relationships

Eun-jin also shared the unique experience of portraying a struggling filmmaker, offering her a chance to step behind the lens. “As an actor, while on set, I’d only seen directors shout ‘ready, action!’ and it always looked so cool. This time around, I loved that it was my turn to shout that out loud. I really enjoyed saying ‘cut!’ and ‘okay!’” In doing so, she connected her character’s challenges to her real-life journey as an actress.

Similar to the cast of another recent K-drama, “See You At Work Tomorrow,” which provided insights into the corporate world, Kangjun discussed how his role has reshaped his understanding of workplace dynamics. “We work freelance, right? I’ve never been part of an organization, and I always thought that if something unfair happens, you should definitely fight it. But several things happen in the workplace, and you can’t always get your way. Sometimes you need to give in and compromise,” he reflected, showcasing the lessons drawn from the production process.

A Shift in Style: Navigating a New Genre

Kangjun noted that “A Love Other Than Yours” presents a significant departure from his previous work, “Undercover High School.” While the former was a lively series filled with over-the-top scenarios, his current role leans more towards everyday realism. “My favorite genre is romance. It is easy for people to relate to and easy for me to get into the character’s headspace,” he said, which aligns with Kangjun’s well-received performance in the romance drama “When The Weather Is Fine,” opposite Park Min-young.

Although Kangjun enjoys the romance genre, Eun-jin reminded him of its emotional challenges. “The sad scenes here were heartbreaking to perform,” she emphasized, with Kangjun nodding in agreement.

Ahn Eun-jin: Embracing Strong Female Characters

Eun-jin, who has garnered acclaim for her role in the period drama “My Dearest,” has consistently gravitated toward robust, author-backed female characters. In “A Love Other Than Yours,” her portrayal of Mi-do reflects this sensibility as she navigates complex relationships. “I think I’m naturally drawn to female characters who have a backbone. Who tackle everything head-on. Who are fearless,” she noted, explaining her criteria for selecting projects. “Mido’s life starts off very tough in the show; her career isn’t flourishing, and her relationship is stagnant. But like the other characters I have played, she doesn’t shy away from challenges. She’s determined to tackle them head-on,” she concluded, expressing a deep connection to her character’s struggles.

As “A Love Other Than Yours” continues to unravel on Prime Video, audiences remain captivated by its juxtaposition of love, challenges, and the messiness of relationships. The series provides a refreshing lens through which to explore the intricacies of human connection in a modern context.
