Telangana CM Revanth Enlists Film Stars to Address El Niño Challenges for Public Awareness

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy Appeals to Film Stars for Public Awareness on El Nino Challenges

As the state of Telangana braces for the impacts of the El Nino phenomenon—which is expected to lead to a significant shortfall in monsoon rains—Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has turned to the film industry and prominent public figures for assistance in preparing citizens for the challenges ahead. At a recent press conference, Reddy emphasized the vital role that celebrities can play in raising awareness about conservation efforts, particularly regarding water and electricity usage.

El Nino’s Impending Impact

The El Nino weather pattern is notorious for disrupting typical weather patterns, and in Telangana, it has already resulted in sources of water and power being stretched thin. With major reservoirs running dry, Reddy pointed out that proactive steps need to be taken to inform the public of the potential for upcoming difficulties related to both water scarcity and electricity shortages. He indicated that the usual storage levels in reservoirs, which should hold around 462 TMC (thousand million cubic feet), have drastically reduced to just 209 TMC—signifying a substantial decline of 42% in the Godavari basin and 72% in the Krishna basin.

Engagement of Film Stars

In his appeal, Reddy specifically highlighted the influence that actors and filmmakers possess in shaping public opinion and behavior. He referred to the recent efforts of actor Vijay Deverakonda, who made a public appeal to highlight the obstacles posed by the El Nino phenomenon. Reddy called on other celebrities to join in this social responsibility, asserting that their voices could amplify the government’s message regarding water conservation and mindful consumption of electricity.

“It is imperative to communicate with citizens effectively during times of potential crisis,” Reddy stated, advocating for sustained efforts in awareness-tactics, especially among those who can deliver messages to varied audience demographics.

Media’s Role in Conservation Awareness

Reddy extended his request beyond the film industry and underscored the media’s responsibility to educate the populace. He urged newspapers to publish more articles focused on the necessity of prudent usage of water and electricity and suggested that television networks prioritize reporting stories highlighting conservation efforts. He believes that a united front involving media and influencers can effectively prepare the public, allowing for proactive rather than reactive measures against water and power shortages.

Current Water and Electricity Conditions

Reddy made it clear that the situation is precarious, urging citizens to use the dwindling water reserves strictly for drinking purposes. The ongoing situation is compounded by an unprecedented rise in electricity demand as the usual October consumption levels have surged from 15,000 megawatts to over 20,000 megawatts—a reflection of increasing consumption across the state’s agricultural landscape. There are approximately 3 million pump set connections in Telangana, indicating the scale of water requirement in agricultural practices.

Conclusion

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s call to action highlights a critical moment in Telangana’s environmental challenges brought on by El Nino. By mobilizing the film industry and media, the government aims to create an informed public capable of implementing conservation practices that can mitigate the impact of water and energy scarcity. This collaborative approach sheds light on the importance of collective responsibility in facing significant environmental challenges.
