NEW DELHI: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with party leader Dipke warning of nationwide protests if he does not step down within 48 hours.
During a press conference in Delhi, Dipke stated, “The Chief Election Commissioner is the biggest anti-national in this country. He should resign immediately as he poses the greatest threat to India’s democracy.”
He criticized the Election Commission’s role in deciding voter eligibility, questioning, “What does democracy mean in our country? It means the people elect the government. Since Gyanesh Kumar became Chief Election Commissioner, the government has been deciding who can vote and who cannot. Is this democracy? You’ve completely distorted the concept of democracy.”
“If Gyanesh Kumar does not resign within 48 hours, the Cockroach Janta Party will initiate a nationwide agitation. We will not back down until he resigns,” he added.
These statements come against the backdrop of an ongoing political controversy regarding the Election Commission’s operations and the SIR exercise. The Congress Working Committee is set to meet in New Delhi on September 29 to address this issue and the broader political landscape.
The controversy has grown following a report from The Indian Express which indicated that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised concerns at least 14 times over 10 months regarding electoral roll procedures and SIR-related decisions.
The Election Commission has insisted that differences in internal discussions are a normal part of a multi-member constitutional body, asserting that all final decisions, including those regarding SIR, were made unanimously.
Former Chief Election Commissioner Om Prakash Rawat emphasized that decisions within the poll panel must be reached either through consensus or majority vote. “However, once a decision is made, it must either be by consensus or by a majority vote,” Rawat stated in an interview with ANI.
