Tripura has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the third Indian state after Mizoram and Goa to be declared fully literate, crossing the 95% literacy threshold set by the Ministry of Education.
According to Preeti Meena, Director (Adult Education) at the Union Ministry of Education, Tripura has reached a literacy rate of 95.6%, surpassing the benchmark set by UNESCO and the Government of India for full literacy.
The development comes after consistent progress under the ‘ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) New India Literacy Programme’, which helped reduce the number of non-literate individuals in the state from 23,184 to below the margin for full literacy.
Citing the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2023–24, Meena noted that Tripura’s literacy rate had earlier stood at 93.7%, highlighting the rapid improvement in recent months.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha celebrated the achievement, recalling that in 1961, the state’s literacy rate was just 20.24%. He noted that despite numerous socio-economic hurdles, Tripura recorded steady progress, rising to 73.66% in 2001, and 87.22% in the 2011 Census.
Apart from literacy, Tripura is also performing strongly on economic fronts, ranking second among northeastern states in both per capita income and Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
This recognition as a fully literate state reflects Tripura’s commitment to inclusive education and human development, making it a model for other states aiming to improve their literacy rates.
